I know quite a lot of people in the 2 sectors that I want to work in. I am wondering - has anyone used networking to get a job

Also someone who I vaguely know has been appointed to a position where they might be hiring - i did help this person raise 2.5k before; - Is it a good idea to be upfront and ask if they are hiring? I'm going to a launch of a document that this person will be attending; I could casually say I'm looking for a job

Any advice on this situation or networking in general

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I got my last job as a direct result of networking.
I work in IT. I try to attend user groups and training courses where possible.

Through both mediums I knew a group of people who run a training and consultancy company.

I heard they might be looking to hire new staff to expand so i gave them an informal call. They were delighted that i contacted them and I ended up getting the role.

I was told afterwards that although they had contacts from more experienced people, i got the job because they know me from the courses and user groups, they knew my attitude, had a good idea of my skill level and work ethic and picked me over more expereienced folks they didnt know.

So I would never underestimate the value of good networking and putting yourself out into your peer group in a favorable light.

    LinkedIn.

Seriously. It's the American version of networking. They don't do it the way we do, so they set up a website to do it.

I know a number of friends who have got jobs through it.You need to be active on it, to keep yourself in the spotlight a bit, and connect to anybody you can. Friends of friends, etc. I've been told a lot of the jobs out there are hitting LinkedIn before anywhere else now. I'm job hunting right now, for the last year, and there seems to be a much bigger move towards LinkedIn in the last few months (or maybe that's just me!!). I can see, though, that if used effectively, it could work very well. Keep everything on it professional though, because people do actually seek you out to look at your profile on it - potential employers etc. No stupid photos or silly comments about what you did last night. It's most definitely not Facebook. Follow as many companies that you're interested in as you can, because a lot of them post their news updates on them, and you'll hear of hiring and expansions there, before anywhere else.

I would also suggest talking to the guy you know. As a friend of mine says, put yourself out there. How can people find you if they don't know you're looking?? Don't be really pushy about it, but certainly, mention it to him and ask him to keep your name in mind. And then....go find him and connect to him on linkedIn!!

    Best of luck.
