    Hey,

I'm hoping to do Business International with German this year and was wondering is it necessary to have done business on the Leaving Cert, as I haven't?

I know its not a requirement but I don't want to be putting myself in a situation where everybody else is better than me and I have to do twice the work they do just to get up to their standard. I'd rather go in as equal as I possibly could.

I like business and economics but not so much Accounting. I also love german. So it'd be quite a good subject for me. So my question basically is, am I expected to have some knowledge of the course (business, economics, Accountancy, etc) or do we start from scratch?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

I don't think so. The grade requirements for the course are:

    - Leaving Cert OC3 or HC3 in Mathematics
    - Leaving Cert HC3 in any other language other than Irish & English

There is nothing in regards having Leaving Certificate Business etc.

Also, if you look at the module outlines for year 1 on the Business studies courses alot of the modules are named 'Introduction to *subject*'. So pretty much the course will be set at an introductory or beginner level.

Also, just letting you know, I got in touch with the programme chairperson in regards the Bachelor of Business Studies - International course. Nothing is finalised yet but talks of reducing language related module credits and increasing business module credits is on the cards. Also all the modules are subject to ammendment but iv been told that alot of language related 1st year modules will remain the same.

    Thanks for that!

I know with the new course "Business - International" that you can no longer study 2 languages, instead it is just the one. Do you know if there will be a balance of each, like will I be doing around 60% business and 40% German or will it be 50/50? I understand that there will be quite a lot of business but I was hoping to be doing a fair amount of German aswell!

From what I was told that may be happening, it looks like that (taking German as your example), the new course will be 2/3's Business & 1/3 German. Basically looking at roughly 20 credits per year for the language modules and 40 credits per year for the business modules (It was roughly 30/30 credits for each previously). Then again, as I was told that nothing is finalised or set in stone as of yet so it's unsure what is exactly happening.

It doesn't matter if you have done Business Studies for the leaving, in reality a lot of the stuff on the Business studies lc exam is irrelevant and the rest is pretty straightforward. All courses that you undertake work originally from the introduction phase and then you begin to specialise as you go further in the course. Its about a 50/50 split of people who did business studies in my year and there have never been any problems in this regard.

You start from scratch so it doesn't matter whether you've done Business Studies for LC or not. In addition to the university orientation week, the DCU Business School usually have an extended orientation week for new students.
