Right I'll try explain this as best I can.

I'm heading to the states next week and want to bring my phone. I'm currently on 3 billpay. As I don't want to incur insane charges for the internet I figured I'd best turn off the data roaming.

Now, my question is, if I turn off data roaming but leave ON location services for the sole purpose of "Find My iPhone" will it still charge me a fortune?

I'm afraid of losing the phone abroad so want to have the ability to track it down should such thing happen, just dont want to have the internet on as 3's price plane is crazy.

Turning off Data Roaming will save money, but it will also render Find my iPhone inoperative, unless the person who finds it logs on in a Wi-Fi zone, or puts a local SIM into it (Assuming it's unlocked and this is possible).

Well at the moment Data Roaming is off, it's always been off. Yet I can still track my iPhone, as long as Location Services is turned on.

That's because you're not roaming, you're using your home network.

Ah, makes sense! I'm not very technology smart :o

Data Roaming off, lost phone = me fucked?!

Yes, tape it to your hand and you'll be fine ;)

Seriously though, how long are you going for, and is your iPhone unlocked? - would it make sense to buy a local US prepaid SIM online?

I went to Chicago for two weeks last year and ordered a T-Mobile SIM from www.mrsimcard.com. It cost about €70, but gave me free data and local calls for the duration. The way the US travel apps, maps, restaurant finders etc work so well made it worthwhile, and it was a great aid to the trip.

Roaming on my Irish network and using the data I did would have cost over €200

Interesting. I'm heading over for 3 weeks in July.
How did everything work on your phone with the different sim? as in, was all your email, viber, whatsapp, etc. all working as normal?
