So I recently started playing this summer am using a beginner set of spalding clubs / driver and an oddessy putter

    handicap of 28

struggling heavily with the 3 - 5 wood so invested in a 3 iron and soing grand with that .. it gets up and goes straight ..
would it be in my interest to get a "hybrid" or "rescue" club and if so what to look out for? ive only hit one of these clubs once and the shot felt like a hard smack or thud but generally seems to get the ball some what air born and straight from what ive seen.

also on another note ive only a pitch and sand wedge.. would it be worth while in investing in a lob wedge for them small wee putts as potential is limited for short taps off the fringe and so on

    any feedback welcome thatnks

Hey mate, I play off of 22 at the moment(waiting on my offical handicap) just a few opinions from my own clubs.

I have a hybrid 3W and 4W rescue clubs and have to say they are invaluable, barring my fariway driver they are very very helpfull for when you scuff your tee off and need to hit again from the high stuff 20-50 yards in front of the tee box. I have also found the hybrids very easy to hit off hillsides(at steep angles)

I also have a 60degree loft wedge, and today alone i used it 8 times from a range of 3 foot off the green to 18 foot to great effect, they come in very very usefull and if you get one you will notice that you start to use your SW and PW alot less :)

Just my opinions :) hope it helps

no problem at all, I use a Diablo edge tour driver 9.5 stiff my 3W and 4W and Fairway driver are all a brand called SKYMAX(nothing speical nice started set) The Irons are Skymax aswell 3iron to PW, I use a 60degree loft wedge(Spalding is the makeand only cost me 20Euro in the golf shop here in waterford and an Oddessy putter :)

If you are thinking of getting clubs like loft wedges ect I would suggest getting a cheap one to start to see if it suits you as different players like different degrees in loft.
You can get 52/56/58/60 degree wedges so I would ask the staff in halfpenny to get a little help deciding which would be best for you, ya know.

As for a rescure club I would have to say again to start with a 2nd hand one as if you dont like the feel or degree/loft at leaste its not a lot of money lost.

There are hundreds on Adverts.ie and most golf shops have a 2nd hand section so try looking there.

    hope this helps :)

In fairness I think its each to their own on the issue of 3 iron v hybrid.
For me its 3 iron all the way. I used to be brutal with long irons but its amazing how far your game can improve with a lot of practice!
Now the 3 iron is one of the most consistant clubs in my bag whereas the hyrid is totally inconsistant. Like I say find what works for you and stick to it. Dont just follow the herd!

hey man .. yeah i hear ye, i like my 3 iron alot but if the ball is in fairly lenghty fairway fringe it can be difficult to connect smoothly.
thats why i was considering it
