    Hi all,

I am not great with motors, but I recently bought a golf, its a 2001 model I think that's a Mk4 but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I cant figure out how you lock the boot lol? I cant put the key into the lock on the boot and when I lock the car (I don't have a fob btw) the boot does not lock.

I would check the manual but there isn't one. I tried searching online but it mostly resides around fobs etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Baz

Does the boot lock when the other doors are centrally locked?

Do you want to lock the boot while leaving the other doors unlocked?

These VW locks will allow the key to spin around in the lock if the wrong key is used or if the lock is not lubricated.

The boot doesn't lock when I centrally lock the rest of the car. I would like to just be able to lock the boot as I can't at all.

The key will only go into the lock about half way, and I can't rotate the key. Is there anyway to lock the boot with a button inside the car?

When I lock mine it locks the boot by default.

You could try and spray WD40 in the boot lock and see does it make any difference?

I'll have a look at the haynes manual at home if You haven't found a solution later.

Dunno much about golfs, but I seem to recall a few issues with boot locks on these. Is your rear window washer working?

I think I may have an idea what is wrong.

The rear window washer on the Mark 4 Golf (which you do have) can leak.
This messes up the electronics that control the motorised lock.

While trying to fix the bloody thing I found that under certain circumstances the motor would stop in the wrong position so when you closed the boot it would bounce off the motor instead of locking.

You can compare that directly to locking a normal internal door of your house and then trying to close it.

The fix I had to do was completely disconnect the electrical part of the boot lock. Its just a plug, and then make sure the motor is retracted.

As I type I remember exactly what it did.

When you press the open button on the boot lid the motor should go make a noise then another different noise shortly after.

This is the motor pushing out an arm which opens the the boot latch and then retracts it so you can close it. It happens so fast that a human could never open the boot and close it before the arm was retracted.

Pathetically small pic but that arm is what goes in and out of the main body of that box.

The problem I think you are having is that due to a past window washer problem the motor is constantly being fed electricity and keeping the arm in the out position stopping you from closing the boot.

I had the same thing and kept trying to close it until the force of closing it over and over broke the teeth on a plastic cog in the motor box and it was fine after that. I think the motor kept running until it burned out. There was melted plastic in it.

It is a matter of popping off the rear trim in the boot and disconnecting the power cables to the motor box. The arm should automatically retract once you disconnect the power.

I have replaced that box on mine and the actual latch and I can not get it working again so anyone who has experience with it please share as with out this working you will always have to use the key to open the boot.

Not a major problem but when you let a passenger out its annoying having to stop the engine since the button wont work.

Thanks alot for responding. It is frustrating and it seems it might be a more common problem than I first thought. I have a friend who is pretty handy with motors so I will see what he thinks and refer him to this post for an idea of what it could be :)

Thanks all for helping me out. If I get it sorted I'll let ya know :)

Do indeed, it would be interesting to know whats up with it;) Mine had some issue with the rear washer too at some stage because the plastic on the tailgate was not put back properly by the previous owner. Very common !

I never got a chance to look at the haynes manual the other night so I will check it out this evening just incase.

I doubt the washer damage was caused by anyone. Mine has popped off three times so I had to use super glue this time. There is too much pressure for the actual design to handle.
