Help me explain why she dosnt have insurance

just had a 30 min argument with a friend of a friend about the fact that she dosnt have insurance.

    the story

last November her car broke down and is sitting outside her house ( 1.0L corsa , she then replaced the car with a 1.4L Vw.

when she bought the new car she never told the insurance company that she had switched to her new car.

today i found out all this when she said her insurance was going to run out and asked if i had any suggestions for places to get quotes because it was going to cost more to insure the 1.4

when i figured the car insured was the old broken corsa i may of exploded at her a little bit and said a few hurtful remarks when she wouldn't listen to me that the part of the insurance for driving other cars did not work in this case.

now im looking for some proof explaining what i had said to give to her in order for her to ring the insurance company and put things right. or am i in the wrong and need to say sorry ?

It will be on the front of the actual certificate of insurance and there are samples of the wording here

Regarding the 'driving other cars' bit, from what I remember it is usually spelt out pretty clearly something like '...covered to drive other cars which do not belong to the insured or their spouse...' .

Driving without insurance is a pretty serious offence, people can get prison sentences for it. Can't overstate how serious a mistake this is, and a judge would probably either laugh at that excuse, or take it as an attempt to insult his intelligence.

I think the part included in policies of driving other cars doesn't apply to cars hired by her or cars that are not registered in her name. If the VW is registered in her name then she is not insured to drive it under her existing policy afaik.

Her insurance policy document will have it listed in the fine print. If it still doesn't register with her then get her to hear it from the insurance company directly.

Just tell her to read her policy docs.

Tbh, i'd be thinking of reporting her for it. She doesn't realise just how serious it is. I wouldn't want to be involved in a crash with her! Maybe this wont be the most popular of views. But ffs!

Sure if she crashed it or it was stolen she'd just replace it, with a 1.6 Ford.

Why did she not just transfer the policy maybe she was naive but for the sake of a 5 minute phone call could save alot of hardship

Couldn't agree more, if the guards stop her she'll be in big trouble. More worrying though is what happens if she is unlucky enough to have an accident and injure either herself or someone else! This is illegal for a good reason!

Because she has this notion in her head that she is insured to drive "any" other car under her policy.

If the cars taxed and nctd and not in her name she can afaik. depends on the company

But the OP said she changed cars to a VW so can only assume that the VW is now registered in her name meaning she is not covered to drive it under the existing policy of the old Corsa. That would be like me going out buying a second car and not bothering to insure it seperately because I have insurance on my other car. Insurance companies put this clause in to prevent this.

Tell her to drive through a Garda checkpoint and ask them. Bye Bye Car.

    Report her tbh.

Ive absolutely no time for insurance dodgers. Tax i dont mind so much but insurance is a big no no.

No insurance and people who drive for a living talking on phones are pet hates

To be fair she isn't dodging insurance, she just doesn't seem to grasp the concept that she is not insured on her new car under her existing policy. I'm not making ignorance an excuse however and neither would a court of law.

Ask her if she won a Ferrari in the morning, does she think her Insurance would cover her on it. If she can understand the logic of that, explain to her that her own situation is the same.

Also explain to her that by having an Insurance disc on her window from a different car, with a different reg, she's committing Insurance fraud, whether or not she knows the legalities of it, and can be prosecuted.

What are the odds she transferred the tax/NCT disc too!

she is very silly transferring her policy over to her 1.4 vw would probably have cost her little or nothing anyway ,why does she not ring them up and ask how much to transfer cover

Good point about the Tax, don't you have to produce insurance docs before a disc is awarded ? Or do the Tax office even check the insurance ?

That said I know a few people who just simply believe they are right because they say so !! Impossible to get them to believe otherwise.

Then add fraud to the list of offences.

Changed from 2001 Ibiza 1.0 to 2011 same 1.2 - insurance only went up €50...

Cos it would be exactly what you said!! I remember going from 1.0lt to 1.4 for less than €50... €37 stands out in my head, and at the time of the 1.0lt I priced for if I wanted to transfer remainder of my current insurance at the time to a 1.4 or 1.6 it would have just been €30.

So complete daft what she's done

exactly, totally agree, what she is doing is putting other people out of pocket by driving with no insurance, if she crashed in to someone and has no insurance how is she gonna pay for the damage, she should be reported to the guards

You and me and every policy holder will end up paying for her thru the insurance levy.

But as the OP said, she believes that she is insured. Seems to be a case of genuine ignorance as apposed to intentional illegal cary on.

The seriousness of what she has/is doing does need to be drivin' home however. Get her to call the Gardai and ask them is she insured. someone needs to stiffen her cough. especially after the OP tried to explain things to her and she is having none of it.
