Booking a student ticket on IrishRail.ie - Will they ask for Travel Card in person?

    Hi Guys,

Just wondering if, after booking the student ticket on the Irish Rail website, would you be required to present the card to someone in person at the station (particularly Cork Kent Station or Dublin Heuston)?

I have the card, but my friend doesn't and he's insisting that no-one will check it. I simply want to save us some hassle and get him to pay the full ticket.

    But will they check it?

    Thanks,
    Ed.

Irish Rail always check for the student travelcard. I've been checked every single time.

    More like 100 euro fine

Nearly 100% certain you will get caught

They rarely ask to see mine on the intercity trains. Thing is though if you're both travelling together with the same student number on the top of both tickets it would be dead obvious. I wouldn't bother risking it you'll probably get fined or something.

I travel intercity on a weekly basis and have been asked to produce my Travelcard roughly 90% of the time......go figure.

I travel frequently and rarely get asked, I'm surprised if I do. Unless it's the revenue protection people, they obviously ask. Anyway, OP not worth doing it!

How do you actually book a student ticket on irish rail.ie? I just have a ucc card. I dont see an option to book a student ticket!

When you pick the train you want to travel on it shows options down at the bottom of the screen as well as the price, it also has other ticket types which has student options listed.

If you are availing of the student travel promotional offer you don't need the travelcard - just your college ID.

Since this was posted there's been a thread where someone who entered the same student number was sent a standard fare notice - the revenue protection systems would noticed two tickets with the same number on the same journey and you will get fined. Very good guess!

Which really just proves how much of a scam the travelcard scheme really is.
