I am thinking of changing over from Sky to freesat and I am wondering if anyone knows when or if RTE and the Irish TV channels are scheduled to be on satellite freesat.

Delve into this thread: RTE Announce FTA Saorsat service for discussion and latest news.

RTE and other Irish channels are not scheduled to be on Freesat (other than 4 RTE radio stations).

Correct Charles, Irish digital television channels and services will not be available on 'Freesat' but will be available free-to-air (FTA) via satellite. RTÉNL is currently in the process of developing and testing a FTA satellite service, 'Saorsat'. 'Saorview' is Ireland's FTA digital terrestrial television (DTT) service. Great technical info and news HERE (TechTir website) and HERE (SaorTV/SAORFREE website).
'Saor' is an Irish/Gaelic language word meaning 'free'.

Thanks Pressthebutton, I know about Saorsat, but as it's not launched yet, will involve different equipment and will be in a different position to where the original posters dish is alligned (having previously been with Sky), I thought it was just quicker to let him know that RTE etc won't be launching on Freesat.

Of course there were plans to launch "Diaspora TV" (an international version of RTE) on Freesat, but these plans were abandoned due to lack of funding.

    I know about Saorsat...

Sorry Charles, my last reply was for the benefit of the OP (who asked a very legitimate question) and any others new to this topic/terminology/or indeed the country. Any implied suggestion that you were not personally up to speed in this area was unintentional.

Ha ha, and I didn't intend to sound miffed, but looking back at my post, it could be seen that way.

The important thing is that we're sharing information and that's always a good thing here :)
