How can Arts be used as a backdoor for Psychology

I have Arts and Psychology Through Science down as backups if I don't get pure Psychology in NUIM.

I was wondering how do you go from Arts to pure? I've heard this is the best backdoor for students who don't get the points, and I don't know of any PLC's that teach Psychology.

After first year can I change to pure Psychology in NUIM based on my exam results or is it after the three years that I do a higher degree in Psychology elsewhere?

The Maynooth route is that you take Psychology as a first year arts subject and then if you get into the top 30 of the class you can transfer into the pure Psychology degree! :)

The top 30 students who want to transfer and have at least 60% overall for first year get to continue on to second year :)

But would it be a pure Psychology degree if I made it into 2nd year or still an Arts degree but with Psychology.

My reason for asking is because some people have told me an Arts degree is not recognised by the Psychological society of Ireland and therefore having a full Psych degree would be better.

    A pure psych degree!
    You're transferring into it!

    Hey,

There are two paths which you can choose, there is the BA Psychology and the BSc Psychology. The people who transfer from Arts in first year to pure Psychology therefore get a BA Psychology which is the same degree that people who enter through MH106 get, you effectively transfer into that class. Everyone who chooses the BA Psychology has to do two arts subjects in first year alongside psychology anyways. :)

Both the BA and BSc are fully accredited by the PSI regardless of whether you got the points outright or get through to 2nd year through performance. Everybody does exactly the same amount of psychology.

The people who told you otherwise are wrong.

Also, on a side note, It's not that hard at all to get into 2nd year if you don't get the points for either of the direct routes. Just put the work in, attend lectures, make an effort on the assignments, and do a little study and you will fly though. From what I have seen, people who have gone this route actually end up doing very well because they don't get complacent!

    Best of luck

I think they were referring to people who do Psych as an arts subject (as opposed to pure psych) such as in UCD. I know that one isn't recognised

I'm in 1st year Arts studying Psychology, and one of our lecturers said to us that for students next year onward there would be only 20 places and the cut off would be 70% upward (?)

Hmm, I haven't heard anything to that effect but I guess it could be true? I doubt 20 people in the year get 70% or above... I got 68% in first year and I was ranked 26th(I think) out of 170 something in my year... So it's pretty unlikely there'd be 20 MH101 students actually getting 70s... Then a lot of those might not actually want to continue on with Psychology at all...

I really really hope you were misinformed!!!! I'm also competing although I got well above 60% I didnt quite reach the 70% mark! I really wish we knew more its awful having to wait so long!....anyone else have any experience from previous years??? I thought once you were over 60% you had a really good chance of progressing unless in the rare event there were far more than 30 students achieving grades above 60%....and I was even told by one of the lecturers that some years more than 30 have progressed...Arghhh! Freaking out a bit now!!!!!

By next year I/they meant first years in academic year 2011/2012. For our year it's 60% cut-off and 30 places, next year will be
    70%
    cut-off and
    20
    places.
(Why I put that as a spoiler.. for the giggles :D )

I'd say if you got over 60% you should be fine.. there's no point panicking at this stage because you've done all you can do. Just sit back and enjoy the summer :P

Thanks Jellybeans....not to worry I am still enjoying the summer!!! even though the suspense is killing me!!! I have a couple of back up plans up my sleeve anyway so in all reality it wont be the end of the world if I dont get in.....but its just the not knowing! BTW a bit late but congrats on your own progression! :D

I got exactly 60% and I got a place in 2nd year, so I wouldnt worry too much! I agree that the waiting is hell, it was the end of the summer before I found out (late August)..that was one long summer

I've just had to put it to the back of my mind now at this stage!...Are you glad you went down the psychology route?

Hey guys so I've decided to do psychology through arts and work to get into second year psychology. I studied Music, English and anthropology last year but couldn't face doing English again. I always wanted to study psychology but never had the confidence in myself to go ahead with it, so I've finally made the decision to do it. My problem is I'm freaking out about the reduction of people succeeding in getting through to second year. I know this is true as Rose from the academic advisory office has confirmed it. The thing is I am really willing to work my back side offbut I am afraid this will not be enough. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to help with psychology if I needed it I just feel so afraid I won't get in. I'm not the most intelligent and I would really appreciate any help or tips.

What's difficult for one person is easy for another.

I suggest you relax and enjoy the last few days of summer. When the first year semester comes see how you find Psychology. If the workload/study time suits you then you should have a good idea whether or not you can do well in it.

I also desperately want to study Psychology but until wednesday I have no clue whether or not I will get the points so I'm trying to relax for now.
