Three C-5 Galaxys arrived in Dublin this morning carrying the Presidential convoy. A pity the weather was so grey but even so they are really impressive aircraft.

I hope you like them as it would appear there'll be no more photos of the visit due to the ott security operation being mounted around the airport.
All of the 'normal' viewing areas around the airport perimeter have been closed to the public already.
The cost of the steel barriers placed all along the southern perimeter road and the Garda manpower for this operation must be staggering.
I thought the country was broke!

This level of "security" is highly unnecessary in my view and it just does not happen like this in the USA and nor would it be tolerated. :(

    +1
I can understand them being a bit jumpy due to the recent Bin laden episode but what they are doing is completely over the top....

not at all. very efficient recycling of stuff from the queenie's visit. biggest irritant is that i'll have to leave for work extra early, since there'll be no chance of going at an "enthusiastic" speed on the back roads to make it into work if running late

I hear the 2nd 747 which has all the press and extra secret service, support staff etc will be landing at approx 1900 tonight.

But as I've just seen, there's nowhere to stop. Garda and army out in force!

A Delta 767 is on the way into Dublin now (DAL8880) - that's probably what you heard about. Since there always has to be a backup VC-25 for AF1, they would not send one of the two ahead of the other.

Yeah, this came direct from Andrew Air Force base.

I saw the Chinooks and Whitehawks doing 4 laps around the area on Friday.
Absolutely fantastic - I was going mad I didn't have a camera - but I did have the binocs.

The weather was very poor as "Air Force 1" arrived but that didn't deter the determined spotter!

    82-8000:- http://flic.kr/p/9LdYge

and his support aircraft arrived about 50 minutes later

i dont know if you have ever read this guys thread, he is a pilot with delta, and he has being answering questions posted to him on his thread about being a pilot and other aviation questions. Its excellent.

Well anyhow he happened to be on the dub-JFK route on Monday and he was doing his walk around when air force 1 landed, so he took a couple of pictures.

    Great pics Niloc!

Don't suppose you got any of the chinook with the snapped off rotor blade?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 324 ✭✭Klunk001

I believe there are photo's. Don't know if they will be made public. BB, are you a journo by any chance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 boredbaby

    No. Not a journo.

Heard about this from someone who works at the airport and just wondering why it was being kept so hush-hush.

Can't imagine if it had happened to on of our own air farce helis that it would have been kept so quiet!

You would be surprised how quiet things can be kept :-)

I believe chinooks do not have a rotor brake. Bearing in mind the weather conditions we had the other day it is possible that on shutting down one might have had a blade strike. Blades as big as those can do alot of "sailing" while slowing down, I believe there were gusts of 50 kts recorded at DUB on the day .

just wondering where the reserve CV25 landed or did it travel. Just curious as i got some shots of Air Force one but the reserve didn't make an appearance. did they use the 757 or Air Force 2 as the back up plane.

No, it wasn't. There's no evidence that it came to Europe on this occasion, that I am aware of.
