Meter tails

Hi fellas...Can any "experts" out there oblige me by telling me what is the maximum permitted length of meter tails. I ask, because the nearest point on my new build to the supply pole and line is on the exterior wall of the front bedroom...and I don't particularly want a consumer unit on the bedroom wall...ideally I'd like it in the utility room, which is at the rear of the house...any help or pointers greatly appreciated...I don't know if ESB networks will bring a supply line around corners (two to be exact).
    Many thanks.

    .

I guess that you talking about the mainIf so the ESB do not install this, the electrical contractor does. The ESB will bring the supply to the meter cabinet.

If I were you I would install the distribution board in the utility room. There is no regulation regarding the lenght of the tails once they are sized and installed correctly. I guess you are talking <20m additional?

Hello 2011...thanks for input re my enquiry about meter tails...ideally, I'd like to place meter cabinet on exterior of utility room wall and distro. unit on interior, but if ESB networks won't/can't, bring supply aoround two corners to rear of house, I wondered if the meter tails had a regulatory max. length...I note your point about sizing etc, and from what I've managed to research so far, (incorrectly or otherwise) it seems as if it's possible to extend the length of meter tails, albeit through an isolation device?, and if so that's great; my further question now has to be, could you say what size the cabling has to be...my amateur guess would be in the region of 16mm, and since this extension would be up and across the attic space to the distro. unit, a distance of some 12-15mtrs. would I then need to enclose it in metal or plastic conduit...many thanks for your info. so far.

Its better to overthink than give little thought during the build stage, as then the best option is most likely to be found.

    Just a quick note
The Esb meter cabinet can't be fitted at the rere of the house
It has to be mounted on side of house within 2 metres of front of house
Also your consumer unit(fuseboard ) needs to be mounted below 2.25 metres to top.
If your 16mm tails are vulnerable I would advise to mechanically protect with steel conduit coming up the wall.

As Meercat correctly pointed out the meter cabinet cannot be installed on the rear of the house. Perhaps your utility room is not to the rear??

I would normally like to have it on the side of the house as this looks better.

The ESB will bring the supply as far as the meter only. The electrical contractor will bring the supply from the meter cabinet to your distribution board (consumer unit). It is best not to join this cable. It should be a minimum of 16 mm sq. (L & N) with an earth of 10 mm sq. minimum. It is normally a T + E cable, but can be something else such as an SWA.

I would agree 100% with Meercat's posts above.

I take it that this is a new build?

Have you talked to your electrical contractor about this?

Maybe an underground duct could of been incorporated into the build from the back of house toward the pole, to a front position where the meter cabinet would go, to run the ESB cable into from the back of the house.
