So, do you now favour Ireland joining the British Commonwealth?

So now that the Queen of England has seemingly conquered the hearts of all the Irish people who (according to the media) are desperate to see her, do you favour Ireland apologising for the wrongs the Irish have committed against the British Empire and seeking membership of the British Commonwealth?

Or, with all this (apparent) upsurge in support for the British royal family, is it time to just pull the shutters down on Ireland's sovereignty and republican form of government and vote to join Britain's United Kingdom? In most genuine republics, monarchists and the archaic, blood-based form of authority which they represent would be treated with contempt. In Ireland in 2011, however, we are told almost everybody wants to see it, welcome it and honour it.

Pro-monarchy or pro-republic: what sort of future for Ireland do you want?

So, do you now favour Ireland joining the British Commonwealth? 38 votes

    Some points for you,

    (a) It is called the Commonwealth now, not the British Commonwealth.

    (b) There are Republics in the Commonwealth, along with two nations who were never a part of the British Empire.

    (c) Technically speaking, only England, Scotland and Wales are Britain - the rest around it, including Northern Ireland, are parts of the United Kingdom, but are not geographically British.

    (d) Our leaving the Commonwealth back in the 1940's was as much as Fine Gael trying to prove that they believed in Ireland just as much as everybody else, and to have their stake in Irish history as been the party that made Ireland a Republic. It was also in part to eschew perceptions that they were not interested in the concept of Irish independence. Eamon De Valera had not interest in Ireland leaving the Commonwealth, and did not even attend the ceremonies. Indeed, it has been Mr. De Valera's grandson Eamon O' Cuiv who has suggest Ireland return to the Commonwealth - in part as a further relieving in tensions in Northern Ireland.

    (e) The Queen of England is the head of state in only the Commonwealth realms, not the Commonwealth overall. Nobody has ever suggest we become a Commonwealth realm, nor that we rejoin the United Kingdom.

Whether or not such a debate will be coming up, I just thought I should inform you with a few facts. To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing it happening - but I won't lose sleep if it doesn't happen - if only to further the goodwill between the two communities in Northern Ireland, and to move further away from the horrors of the troubles which plagued them for 3 decades.

We might as well bring back the Tailteann Games for all a Commonwealth Games medal is worth. It's not like we're dealing with a gold medal from the Olympics.

What an absurd false dichotomy. Yeah, neglecting to vehemently oppsose the Queen's visit means we want to abandon our sovereignty and join the UK.

Your Anglophobia is showing; put it away there.

I've been feeling somewhat the same about the reports on this visit. :pac:
After almost a week of an apparent Irish lovefest with British royalty, and before some Robin Bury-type ghoul claims (in the Sunday Independent, no doubt) we should join the British Commonwealth because of this, it's time we got a bit of feedback from people outside radio and television discussions.

Other than being able to partake in the Commonwealth Games, how exactly would it be of benefit to Ireland? I don't buy it myself.. it would only serve to fulfil that woolly headed notion that we need to belong to something greater than ourselves.

    Time for your suppository.

It's not, really. There have been many calls for Ireland to join the British Commonwealth because of this visit. A quick google includes the following:

The Queen in Dublin and the Republic of Ireland in the Commonwealth? (17 May 2011)

Commonwealth Day in Dublin (15 March 2011)

Ireland to re-join the Commonwealth (17 May 2011)

Ireland and the Commonwealth – Towards Membership (16 May 2011)

Not to mention all these people in this rather odd group.

Now, are you implying that they are all guilty of anglophobia?

PS: And seven people so far in this poll would appear to disagree with you.

I think a legitimate question would be whether any one of these countries (UK, US, etc) would even want us.

    Consider that:
    (a) we are under enormous debt and we can't really run our country
    (b) last time they tried we didn't let someone else run our country either.

So who would want such a bucket of ****e?

Isn't there some kind of middleground where not hating the Queen of England doesn't mean you want to join the commonwealth?

Really? Where are they? As far I as I'm aware there are none in the democratic western world. This is more than can be said about monarchies where, in each and every one, armies of genealogists are employed to check rights to become monarch. Can you name one republican state in the western world where authority rests on somebody's "right" by blood to be head of state? And, no, Ireland wouldn't be one of them.
But where are these genuine Republics, hardly populated by genuine republicans which as we've learned this week are hypocrital, ignorant, cynical and hardly a kind word to say about to a welcomed visitor? :(

Actually "we" have not learnt that. You may have taught yourself that, but most people wouldn't expect the people whom you're alluding to to be familiar with republican ideas. I didn't hear them recite Machiavelli, Hobbes, Montesquieu, Rousseau or Kant, never mind Tone, Emmet or MacSwiney. They appeared to be much more au fait with British soccer teams, so if we're going to be ridiculous about labelling them, why not call them British soccer hooligans?
