Audi A6 Bonnet Red

Can anyone tell me where I can pick up a second hand red bonnet for a 2000 Audi A6. The lacquer is peeling off my paintwork and I'm told it would be cheaper to replace the bonnet than have it sprayed.

If you struggle to find a good one to replace it with you'd get it resprayed for €250-300 these days.

You probably wouldn't really. Of all the panels you could haggle on with a car, a Bonnet's the worst because of the size - particularly on a large car like an A6. The sheer quantity of paint and lacquer involved compared to a wing, or a bumper would keep the cost high. Not to mention the prep work in getting a bonnet perfectly flat and prepped for paint.

That's just personal experience... went to two places in Cork for a quote for a bonnet respray on a golf and they were both €250 cash. Probably be more for an A6 alright.

You're ignoring the type of repair. I don't know what sort of damage yours had, but if it was badly peppered with stone chips, there's less paint required than there would be if the lacquer's peeling. With stone chips, you can either fill them, or sand them out, paint the affected area and lacquer the whole bonnet. When lacquer's peeling, you've no option but to flat out all the damage, paint the whole panel with base coat, and the whole panel with lacquer.

Just because two panels which are similar need to be painted, doesn't mean they'll require the same amount of labour, materials, or will be the same price.

One of the quotes was to strip back the whole bonnet and go from scratch. Maybe he was a bit cheaper because I got some work done there before. Not sure about the other one I didn't ask him what he was going to do.

Body work has seriously dropped in price though. Another place in east cork are only looking for 250 to respray the bonnet and the front two wings. That does sound a bit too cheap but I've heard a few people say good things about the place.

As far as I can see, bodywork is going back up again. I'd be very surprised if the bodyshop that quoted you would actually strip it back. Hardly anyone would do that.

Interesting... Maybe the last time I looked was right in the middle of the boom. Rang a few places this morning and got some great quotes for work I'm going to get done during the summer. Body Image in Ballincollig are looking for around €400 or there abouts the fully prime and repaint the bonnet, repaint the front bumper and fix up and re lacquer the two front wings (he used some word I didn't hear of before regarding the wings but I asked him and that's how he explained it). I thought it was very good.

400 to repair and paint 4 panels - the whole front of a car? I'd be dubious of that.

Body Image are one of the best body shops in Cork, and I know the lads quite well there. I'd be surprised if they were doing work for that sort of money - they wouldn't even make profit at those prices. The Bonnet alone (Even by your own reckoning) would be minimum of 250 if someone didn't value their time or work. I'll have a chat to them on Monday and see what their take on it is.

Ah come off it, sur I was on the phone to them this morning. I'm not making it up! He said €250 for the bonnet and two front wings. Then he asked me how the bumper was and he said around €400 mark all in if I want that done too. Maybe a small bit more but I'd be out of there for under €500 guaranteed. Sean savage in Ballinacurra was the other lad I rang and he was saying around €250 for the bonnet and the front 2 wings. I won't be getting it done till the summer but I was genuinely surprised with the quotes.

I don't see what take they could have on it if you want to ring them and tell them to raise their prices hold off a while!... That's 4 different body shops that have quoted the bonnet or the bonnet and both front wings for €250. Sean Savavge in Ballinacurra (bonnet and wings), Body Image (car will be like new he said, will also polish the doors), Kevin Neville (bonnet only) and Forge Hill motors (bonnet only). I don't think it's fair to say all those people they don't value their time or money but anyway that's your opinion. This is completely derailing the thread so there's no point in me saying anymore on it. If you don't believe me no bothers but it's a pretty pointless thing to make up!

Note that you have to ring Traynors. I mailed them once but never got a response so rang instead.
To this day I still haven't got a response to my mail.

I've had no luck with a replacement bonnet. Luckuily it's only lacquer peeling off. At least now tks to you I have a realistic idea of costs of respraying. Thanks guys.
