    I just got a HTC Desire S on Vodafone, it is branded with the Voda logo boot screen.
    How can I check if it's S-Off or S-On?

    Has anyone rooted one of these?
    Has anyone de-branded one?

    Google. You need to access bootloader/recovery. Once you get there you should be able to see whether you're S-on or off.
    I don't own a Desire S, but a quick search turns this up fom xda....

    In settings/power/ I disabled "fast Boot"

    Turned the phone off and then booted with volume down and power. Doing this got me into the bootloader as suspected. Nothing special so far.

    Then I selected Recovery from the menu and hit power to select. Still very normal stuff.

    Then I got the little icon that I like to call "The f*ck off" icon. Basically at this point you don't get into recovery and the stupid little icon won't go away no matter how many times you hit the power button. You are S-ON!

    So I tried some other key combinations.

    While still looking at the "F*ck off icon" I hit Power and Volume UP and much to my surprise I actually got the recovery screen.

    Thanks that worked.

    It's S-ON

    I had found something similar, but it didn't mention turning off Fastboot so it wasn't working for me.

    No worries. For more information, I'm sure someone over at XDA could answer your questions on rooting, or s-off if possible;

    If you're stuck, I have an XTC Clip. I can S-OFF it for you for a tenner

    Sorry to highjack the thread but what does S-Off mean?

    It allows you to push unsigned software bundles to the phone - which is required to root the phone, load things like custom recovery partitions like ClockworkMod and to install unofficial software updates.
