Jews and muslims lived in relative peace in that area until fairly recently. To say its simply due to religion isnt accurate.

    What are they?
Are they a sauce? If so, I think that they both have different tastes and it's up to each individual to choose which sauce they like best. I hope this answers your question, although I don't know why you want to know

There has been many atrocities committed on both side. But with Israel its often state sponsored ones.

    Don't really have a side.

However, I think that its often difficult to comprehend just how under siege Israelis feel in their own nation. Their Jewish ancestors originated from that region and they they have as much right as anyone to live there. Its a very small and mainly baron homeland, but it is their only homeland. Lets not forget that on quite a few occassions in the last 60 or so years their nation and people were under threat of being completely wiped out. I certainly sympathise more with them more than a lot of people who could never understand how it feels to have your nation and people's very existence under threat from all sides.

Ah the old chestnut. Lets look at the countries in the region shall we? Syria, want normal relations with Israel and have asked for the Golan heights returned. Egpyt is at peace with Israel, Jordan is at peace with Israel, Turkey is at peace with Israel, Iraq is at peace with Israel, Saudi Arabia while not a fan puts up with Israel. So basically theres Iran. And that gives them the right to kill unarmed Palestinians?

How do people feel about the Irish peacekeeping troops killed as a result of direct or indirect Israeli acts in Lebannon when Israel took slight to brave Irish men trying to do their job?
one example :The Israelis insulted the battalions as Johnnie Walker Irish which infuriated them because Irish troops, whose sobriety has never been in question, refused to retreat before Israel's proxy gunmen in 1980. In the village of At Tiri that year, the Irish went into battle to prevent the South Lebanon Army taking over. They killed one of Israel's Lebanese allies and lost one of their own: Pte Stephen Griffin. I went to his funeral in Galway a few days later, his blue UN beret lying atop his coffin in the breezy seaside churchyard, the rocks and hills looking oddly like the land where he had died 2,500 miles away.In revenge for their own dead, one of Israel's militiamen, Ali Bazi, murdered two Irish soldiers - Pte Smallhorn and Pte Barrett - in an incident that might be regarded as a war crime. But Mr Bazi now lives in safety in the United States

"Defending themselves" is stealing land from Palestinians and committing barbaric acts against innocents in the Gaza Strip?

Holding on to land that's not theirs is right?

Good historical summary here from the BBC:

Poll needs a third option, along the lines of "they're all nuts". Both sides insist that the same bits of land are holy to them. It's become a rat race to see who can breed the fastest, and the Palestinians are winning at the moment. Domination by procreation: does anyone believe this is going to end well?

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

. Their Jewish ancestors originated from that region and they they have as much right as anyone to live there.
It's not the fact that they are just living there that is the problem, it's that they kicked out the local inhabitants and are now living in their homes (the ones they left standing) and farms, and have pushed the Palestinians into refugee camps and created the open air prisons that are the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

Do you think people are entitled to take back land because their ancestors once lived there in historical times?

Yep. Go Israel. They've tried whipping them a couple of times and in turn became the whipping boys themselves.

Why no option to vote for both/neither?

In my opinion, both sides have valid claims and grievances, it is not a black and white issue, to suggest otherwise is intellectually lazy and displays an ignorance of history and politics.

May I suggest a book called "The Iron Wall" by Avi Shlaim; http://www.amazon.com/Iron-Wall-Israel-Arab-World/dp/0393321126

It is a well written and unbiased history of the conflict.
