A few months ago I went over that toll bridge by Waterford, stopped with the front of the car just at the start of the toll booth so the car so it wouldn't be blocking my way cause I have a LHD and the fella started complaining that I was too far back

Is there some sensor in the road that the barrier will only open if the car is directly infront of it? or is big brother in action here and they are trying to get a good picture of every car?

I don't see why it would make a difference but I'm just wondering is one's privacy being invaded while driving through regular toll roads with barriers?

...you have no expectation of privacy being in a public place. That's just the way it is. It's what keeps the Papparazzi in business as well.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

    Could well be.

I'm not too familiar with the Waterford toll, but both the Portlaoise and Limerick toll booths have camera's which read (and display) the registration number of the vehicle. At a guess its so that on the unmanned booths, vehicles registered as commercial but that fit under the 1.8m height restriction, still get hit with the commercial charge rather than the private vehicle charge.

    maybe?

Perhaps he was the usual ignorant/bored booth operator who you just happened to annoy that second.

How where you going to pay if you'd parked so far back?

Judging by the way he told the story, he was going to get out of the car and walk around the front of it to pay at the hatch?

Idiots should have just built baskets on both sodes of the booths to take account of this

Some of them have some sort of camera system to determine if you're a car, van, bike etc and charge you appropriately. You might have been too far back for that system ?
