Looking for some advice from the experts...

I am looking to buy a car, and its between the seat leon and the golf mk5 and I have a budget of about €7000. I'm looking for a 1.4L.

Which do ye think represents better value. It seems a 2007 Leon can be bought for the same price as 2005 golf but I hear Volkswagen cars hold their value better. Have ye any experience of these cars and which one would ye go for??

They're made from all the same parts... essentially the same car tbh. Get the Seat.

Whichever one you prefare the look of or is cheaper is the one to get, otherwise, they are both the same car.

See the 'audi a3 or VW golf' thread for more...urm...imformation on the subject:eek:

I had a 2006 Leon for about 4 years. Loved it but there are one or two compromises. On bigger wheels it rides badly, forward visibility is obstructed by the pillars a little and the mirrors are tiny plus the interior is badly designed in parts.

I'd buy another one no problem though. I'd avoid the 1.4, the 1.6 is better but both can give gearbox trouble. Diesel might be worth a look and get Stylance spec.

Golf 5 defo if you after better drivers car and dont have more than 1 kid, at least with 1.4 engine.. Leon is bigger if you need some more space.. but also a bit clumsier to drive

They drive the same tbh, are the same size too. If anything the Leon is a better drive at the expense of a little comfort.

Leon Stylance looks real good!!! but theres just something off putting about the seat badge.

Dont worry about the badge. Badges are bullshít to be honest.

Dont purchase a car based on a badge; purchase based on its condition, its practicality and its price. Especially when they are two very similar sized cars and made from the same parts more or less.

Seat looks miles better than the Golf.

We had a new Golf 1.4 Sportline for a year (2007), and a same year Leon for a couple of days while the Golf was getting repaired (no fault of the car).

Similar spec, only difference I noticed was that the Leon had electric folding mirrors. Golf has a nicer dashboard. Similar to drive, Leon actually felt a bit nippier but that may have been my mind playing tricks on me.

Also "nippier" is relative as both cars would struggle to overtake their own shadows.

Try for a better engine or it's a bit frustrating.

I currently own a 06 Leon 1.6 petrol and must say i really enjoy driving it, ive had it for just over 3 and a half years now and havent had any issues with it, i would highly recommend this car.

I know the VW Golf has 5 euro NCAP stars and the Seat Leon has 4 NCAP stars. So the Golf is a safer car and it may save your life.
I know the Seat Leon is cheaper than the Golf and you might get more extras in the Leon. I think that the Golf has a nicer and a classier dashboard and I think the dashboard in the Leon feels cheaper.
I do think the that Leon is better value than the Golf. My aunt had a Golf in 2004 up until 2007 and she put up 200,000 miles on it and it never really caused a bother I think the only problem she ever had with it was one of the rear passengers getting jammed for some reason and it wasn't that expensive to get fixed.
She traded the Golf in 2007 and got a Leon and she really enjoyed it for the first few months after about 40,000 miles the electric folding mirrors jammed shut. She brought it to the garage and was fixed under warranty. She had no other problems with the car then up until around 70,000. She was driving home one day when the electric windows all just dropped suddenly. She pulled over and they refused to go up. She rang the Seat Garage and they said bring it in first thing in the morning. My aunt Parked the car in her garage and got up the next morning and the central locking wasn't working so she had to use the key to unlock the door and she drove the garage. I can't remember how much it cost to get fixed but it was well over 2000 euro.
The final straw came when she was on her way to visit us on a warm Summers day in 2010. She had the drivers window, the passengers window open and the sunroof. She heard a click in the fuse box and everything closed. This isn't the worst of it her flashers started flashing and her car locked and the dead locks activated. So she was trapped in the car. She completed her journey and my dad had to smash a window to allow her get out of the car. She left the car that day and we drove her to Blackwater motors and she bought a Golf and hasn't looked back since. Not one bit of trouble.

the electrics in the leon and the golf would be the very same. as are the engines gearbox etc.. they will have the same common faults..
op avoid the 1.4 engine. they are dead and dont give very good mpg
