Insurance and Registration Question

    Hey Folks,

As some of you will know herself and myself bought our first car recently. I have one or two questions relating to insurance and registration if you don't mind.

A - The car is insured in her name with 123.ie. She has a policy number and payment has been taken. The start date of the policy is from 12:01am tonight. She hasn't received an insurance disk yet. If she has a print out of the policy, can she drive until she gets that?

B - It's a used car and so the registration document needed to be sent off by the previous owner to be changed over to her name. She hasn't received that in the post yet. Can she drive the car as a result?

C - There is 6 weeks tax left on the car just in case anyone's wondering. Naturally that'll be renewed when the time comes.

    Many thanks.

Drive on, keep your proof of insurance with you when driving in case you're pulled over by the cops.

Well, technically she is insured, but a print-out won't completely satisfy the gardaí if stopped. More than likely, she'd be given 10 days to bring the actual certificate of insurance to the garda station of her choice as proof of insurance.

If you enter the registration here it will tell you if the change of ownership has been processed yet. Mail can be slow :)

    Not really a question :D

Yes, she paid her money, the previous owner handed her the keys, she owns the car. Buying a car isn't like buying a house.

I sold a car a few weeks ago, the new owner got the new cert. in the mail exactly a week after I posted it off with the change of ownership details filled in.

    Thanks guys,

I appreciate the advice as always. I checked the registration site challengemaster linked to and it's reporting no changes. A cause for concern?

    Many thanks.

A - She can drive legally for next 10 days, as displaying insurance disc is only obligatory from 10 days after commencement of policy. Considering it's almost 11pm now, you have 9 days left to make sure you get disc and stay legal.

B - She can drive the car legally in Ireland, even the document didn't arrive, assuming she signed it when buying. Otherwise insurance policy might not be valid. Remember that if she wants to drive abroad, she needs registration certificate, so until it arrives, she can't take her car abroad.

When has a visitor to the UK or France (or any EU country) with a car ever been asked to produce the registration cert?

and the insurance company doesn't care about who's name is on the cert. so it's matters not one iota whether she signed the change of ownership or not.

The cert. is only an issue when you need to tax the car or sell it.

OP, if the website isn't showing that there has been a new cert. issued by tomorrow, get on to the previous owner, tell him that you might have been flashed by a speed camera yesterday and that you want to make sure that he's posted off the cert. - that will get him moving if he's forgotten to post it!

I assume at most of road-checks.
At least I was few times.
That's a requirement from Convention of International traffic from Vienna from 1968.
While travelling abroad you need to carry your registration certificate.
BTW in many EU countries, you have to carry your registration cert with you anyway, no matter if you are abroad or not.

If they will have to pay for the claim, they will surely care about who's name is on the cert.

I'd be interested to know in which countries you were stopped and asked to produce the registration cert. I have been to France three times in my own or a friend's car and coming off the ferry the police didn't even ask to see our passports, let alone a driving licence or the car's registration cert. I've also been to the UK in my own car several times and have never been asked to produce any documentation.

    You have experience of this?

To be honest, I can't remember any time that I was stopped by police and not asked for my registration certificate.

I have been to France three times in my own or a friend's car and coming off the ferry the police didn't even ask to see our passports, let alone a driving licence or the car's registration cert.

Because they don't check it usually when you are entering the country.
But if you are stopped for random road-check or you are stopped for committing any road offence, you are always asked for your registration cert.
I've also been to the UK in my own car several times and have never been asked to produce any documentation.
I believe UK police does not ask drivers of Irish registered cars to produce reg cert, even they are allowed to.

    You have experience of this?

    No experience at all luckily.

But if it's stated in their policy that car has to be registered in my name, then I can imagine that's going to be enforced in case of the claim.
