I reckon we do need some sort of 'how to' sticky at this point for these kind of posts! But OP, I would start by doing a simple search to help yourself first, as these questions get asked a lot and there is a lot of info waiting for you here. Boards also has an excellent search function now you know..

do a search there are threads on it. CRO is only €20 I think, you can do it online only takes a week or so.

Do you have the site/software ready to sell your goods? what are you selling?

You don't have to register with the CRO to start a business. Setup your website and start trading without delay, then when you are up and running you can join all the dots.

If you are registering a .ie for the business then you will need to register with the CRO and get a RBN (Registered Business Number) off them and supply that when applying for the domain name.

Yes for a .ie domain you have to register but for every other domain you don't so just use a different domain name. This is in place in Ireland to stop cyber squatting which is a great/annoying system.

so i can proceed with a .com domain name and dont have to enter all that "crap"... just want to get it up and started.

With the CRO, is that 20€ a one off fee and is that all the fees i have to pay, or is there a monthly surcharge etc.. i must pay. want to do things right and stay on the "legal" side of things:-)

This is a classic newbie mistake, never take short cuts like that when they have such long term consequences. If you're aiming to sell to the Irish market primarily a .ie is a must.

The CRO fee is a one off for registering a business name, no subscriptions. Obviously you have to pay your taxes, VAT if registering and if your taking payments fee's to either merchant bankers and card processors (search the forums it's been covered lots) or for starting out quickly paypal.

If the OP is trading as anything other than their own name (which is more than likely going to be the case), they do need to register. I understand the "Just do it" sentiment, but if you're going to give technically illegal advice it should come with the relevant caveats and pitfalls identified for those that might follow it.

For the sake of the €20 registration fee and additional headaches it can/would cause, it's a short cut I'd strongly advise against.

Thanks Paul. I will take this route. The hosting stuff. It gives me a number of options to choose to pay a monthly fee. What is this?! This is the last step I'm confused about. Other than that I'm ready to start designing the website.

    Thanks Paul

Hosting is basically just buying room on a server to place all of the files that make up your website, so that it can be accessed by users. So somewhere to put the 'stuff' so other people can see it.

Discussion of individual hosting providers isn't allowed on boards, but if you've found one you're happy with (or can find positive recommendations for) then if you talk to them they'll be able to help (they've a vested interest, but the vast majority do give good advice). In your position, you're best bet is to start with a fairly basic package and then you can easily upgrade if/when required down the line.

There can be a huge difference in performance and (especially) customer support between hosts, so do take a little care in choosing one.

yes ,its just 20 euro ,very easy to get done,
then you can buy your domain name.:D
then you can if you need to register with revenue,
but you can trade straight away if you need.

The part highlighted in my reply, which could directly lead to breaches under the Registration of Business Names Act, 1963.
