    Hi Guys

Mods hope this is in the right place.

I have a pigeon problem around our house and Im wondering if a air rifle under one joule would be suitable to use?

    Thanks

I know nothing about air rifles but that sounds woefully underpowered for the job (therefore cruel) as I don't believe they need licensing so I'm thinking airsoft.

    Try this:

    http://www.fourteenacre.co.uk/the-pigeon-trap/

Or apply for a license and buy a more powerful air rifle made for hunting and quick, clean dispatch.

that would probably only give it a big bruise and leave them injured or unable to fly.

as above air soft rifle is far too under powered and would be crule.
i was looking at all the options for a similar problem a while back and found the high powered air guns very expensive compared to a decent .22LR. they both require the same sort of licence and the licence costs the same.

i got a very clean krico .22LR with scope for 300 yoyo's when even the best and most expensive air rifle ( almost 800 yoyo's ) couldnt match the distance. With the .22LR you also have a much better chace of a quick dispatch

And with a surpressor the rifle is not much louder than the air rifle

Caveat being a .22lr Rifle will go through cladding or similar shed materials.

So ensure a decent backstop, preferably clay or grass

I thought you could only shoot pigeons if they were attacking your crops otherwise protected?

    no body here never have an air rifle as a kid:D Of course you will kill a pigeon with one but you will have to be close, as a kid i would spend the day shooting all sorts with air rifles and even crows could be killed by them.Same way some lads use slingshots for ducks these days ;}

im not saying u cant kill a pidgeon with a air rifle but as u say u do have to be alot closer and IMHO u have a much better chance of a good clean dispatch therefore not crule

And neither do you and he did say around his house.

Also if he did have crops and he had a problem with pigeons wouldnt he have to own the land or have permission to shoot on it to take care of the problem?

Well the OP has a problem and whether if its on his land or not he needs help. I vote try the air rifle and if doesn't work ask some of the lads on here, they will clear all pigeons in a few hours!

Instead of you lot arguing amongst yourselves, why not ask the OP the problem, then figure it out.

The derogation is here, from Jan to April, but they usually roll over (I think).

Oh i see what is the pigeon season then, what months can they be shot when not attacking crops?

i would have thought a man like yourself would have known the answer to that fodda, as a 'hunter' yourself. The man asked was his air gun up to it, never mentioned what pigeon species, wood or feral. He got his replys and good ones. Jesus fodda, the ****e you come out with sometimes, id swear your an anti. He asked a question, got his answer.

But the reason was because i knew the season had expired so i will have to wait until they attack my wheat crop in Connemara unless John's sheep get there first.

Just because somebody doesnt think the same as you does not make them an anti.

ah makes sense why i got the warning so. What season? Woodpigeon? Or feral? Oh he didn say, but you presumed. Crops? What if he has grain in a shed? No one thinks the same as me, thats a cert fodda, but i dont call everyone else that. Maybe look back at your posts and see how many people disagree with ya. At the end of the day the man asked for advice on his gun, which he got. Then you come in reading between the lines. Seriously was your post relevent to the op's question
