Came back a few days ago from pattaya, its more seedy than rough. The only relatively rough part would be walking street.Bangkok not rough either.

Safety isnt really an issue in either Bangkok or Pattaya, despite what you read in the papers. As other have said a smile and easy going attitude goes a long way in Thailand. Learn a few phrases in Thai and you'll have a blast. Thais genuinely do appreciate the effort when a farang tries to learn the language. This book is well worth bringing with you, fits in your pocket so can be carried around all day.

I think Pattaya has changed a little over the years mind. Its still a great party town and very safe I just think the growing presence of Eastern Euros (and particularly Russians) have taken a little of the shine off it.Or maybe I am just getting nostalgic in my old age :P
If its your first time in Thailand, do use a bit of cop on, you wouldn't believe the situations some first timers get themselves into! :)

Yes I gathered that from the "Gary" comment, what a sheltered little life you must live.

Bangkok or Pattaya are both very safe, however their are quite alot of annoyances in both but these at best will just annoy you and at worst leave you out of pocket if you fall for the various scams etc.

I went to Pattaya this year for three days as part of my 3 weeks in Thailand and tbh it is not a place I'd fancy returning to, it is like a bad European resort with the cheapest type of Russians, add in thousands of elderly western male sexpats and at least ten thousand hookers and that is Pattaya. Pick a good hotel for your security as petty theft is a problem especially on buses etc.

    Read up here: http://www.stickmanweekly.com/Reader2007/reader4672.htm

Basically all you have to worry about is yourself, because the majority of people who have trouble bring it upon themselves, if in a confrontation it is best to walk away because Thai's will gang up on you and kick your ass without even knowing what happened etc. If going to Pattaya for *I wuv you long time* :D be careful as their are tonnes of Ladyboys who will rob you, and for gods sake rubberise yourself!
