So next years world championship starts a week later than normal. Don't remember Sheffield going on so late as 7th May before.

Also not sure if the world open short match format for late September is back as a BBC event yet.

It used to be said the snooker season followed the football season in England, and with barely a break of 6 weeks to 2 months these days, that's still true I guess.

The story I'm hearing is that the World Open will move country and it could well be held in Austrailia in July, the other ranking event scheduled for April could possibly be held in India straight after the previous weeks event in China.
I don't think the players will moan too much about having an extra week off before the Worlds if the India trip happens!

Austrailia confirmed as host for ranking event in July, the tournament will be held in Melbourne.
Qualifiers will take place in the academy in Sheffield in June.

Well done Barry Hearn on bringing snooker back to Oz

Details of the ranking event in OZ

World Snooker have this morning announced that Victoria will be the province to host the first world ranking tournament down under in July from 18th-24th, with the inaugural Australian Goldfields Open*to be held at Bendigo Stadium until at least 2013.

Former World Champion Neil Robertson has been busy promoting the event and clearly delighted by this he said “This is a long-standing dream come true for me, as I am sure it is for many snooker players and fans in Australia.”

“To have a world ranking event in my home state will be just unbelievable and I hope to get a lot of support.*I know some of the other players are excited about coming to Australia and I’m looking forward to showing them around.” he continued.

“It’s fantastic to see snooker becoming much more of a global game, it looks like we’ll be clocking up a lot of air miles in the next few years!” he quipped.

Robbo is rightly chuffed about this development and added “This is a really special day not just for me but for ALL Aussie snooker fans.”

Yet more exciting developments on the baize.

The worlds always ends on the first Monday in May (public/bank holiday), so its probably happened 1 in 7 times thats it been this late.

BBC aren't showing the short format tourney this season, they are down to three tournaments now.

The only reason BBC are not covering the short format event ie The World Open is because it will be held most probably in India in April, which explains the reason the Worlds will start later next season.
The players will have played in China and possibly India and will obviously need longer than a week to regroup for Sheffield.

However India not confirmed yet but it's highly likely to be confirmed soon.
