Gynecomastia surgrery?

Hey guys, hope someone can answer this. I'll be going unreg for this, but posting in TGC because I feel I'll get a more personal response.

Basically, I'm a 19 year old dealing with gynecomastia for years. When I was around 13-14, I noticed lumps in my chest which the doctors said were just cysts, nothing serious. They said it'd go away too. In the last three or so years, I've researched it more and found out about gynecomastia.

I went to the doctor about it and she said it was not gyne and it was flat enough - that I just need to exercise my pec area and everything would flatten out. I have lost over 1.5 stone and dropped my bodyfat to about 17% and I still feel as if there's something underneath my nipples. Nothing flat, but lumpy tissue under each nipple. It looks like I have small breasts (no pointy nipples though!).

I do realise that I'll have to lower my bodyfat more to see if it's just fat but I really doubt it is just fat. It's seriously affected my confidence - I can't wear t-shirts in fear of people noticing.

If I went for a second opinion and confirmed it was gyne, could I get surgery under the medical card?

First off you should get the second opinion anyway as you're not happy with the first opinion. Then you can speak to your GP or local HSE office about the coverage under a medical card :)

Thanks buddy :) Is it possible so under a medical card? I'm planning on waiting until after summer, where I'll be down more in bodyfat. I'll check again in August/September to see if it is truly gyne and not just fatty tissue - to be honest I can't tell the difference but I have a feeling it's small gyne.

17% would still be quite high and youd still have fat around that area, try dropping it more before going under the knife

Sorry Ickle. I did two bumps when this thread was in TGC, and it was moved from there to here. Noboody was paying attention and it became second page, with no interest. I bumped it to bring it back to the front :) Sorry again!

Thanks kkwwwiwkwkw, I'll be losing bodyfat alright :)

    Hi Op,
Had the same problem until I was 32 (4 years ago). Had Gyno surgery but it cost c. €4k. Not sure its available on medical card in Ireland. Has worked wonders in terms of confidence wearing clothes etc. I understand your pain especially during Summer and wearing of tee-shirts etc.

Hit the gym, clean up the diet and drop bodyfat (if as you suggest you need to). While this won't cure it may increase your confidence and improve the issue.

Best of luck with whatever you do.

I'm surprised that your GP offered that analysis. My GP merely looked, asked me did I have a preference in terms of which hospital I'd like to see a plastic surgeon, and then wrote the relevant letter. I had my first appointment with a plastic surgeon some 6 weeks later. See below.

It is, although I had to visit my gp to find that out. He referred me to the plastic surgeon (asked me what hospital I'd prefer, also). Fatty here is down for it but the surgeon, whom I've now met twice, will not operate until I lose a specified amount of weight. That's as it should be. However, I haven't done so yet. When it is lost, I will return and he'll set a date for an operation.

    Willpower, feckin' willpower!

GYNOLAD, where did you get the surgery? 4k is fairly cheap :D

I'll do all my usual dieting and exercise alright. I'll be a different man heh!

    Thanks pal.

In most cases this is just unflattering distribution of fat. The normal surgical procedure here is for this exact thing and is just to drain fat out - liposuction. I read about this stuff on this website.

Gynecomastia affects up to 60% of men - that's most cases. Gynecomastia is not just fat, it's glandular tissue. It's basically a breast on a man. Read it up - gynecomastia.org

It is being covered by a medical card - which is a ****ing disgrace really.

To say gynecomastia being covered under the medical card is a ****ing disgrace is a disgrace in itself. It's a real medical condition, why shouldn't it be covered?

You have been to two doctors about this, neither of whom have said it was gynecomastia. Genuine gynecomastia is pretty rare. Just keep going with the fat loss, and replace it with muscle. Bear in mind that saggy skin can result from too-fast weight loss and weight gain; so if you are too extreme you might do more harm than good with it.

Most doctors don't think about Gyne when you'e at the pubescent age of 13-14 because it's very common and goes away with age. They were looking for tumours as that's what I was afraid of - breast cancer. They said the lumps were not tumours - basically confirming lumps existed. The next doctor could be right or wrong but I want a second opinion as I think I do have gyne. Genuine gynecomastia isn't rare, it's more common than you think - 40-60% of men have it.

Fat is something I can get rid of, but if it's gynecomastia, muscle won't do anything at all to improve it. All plastic surgeons will tell you that the chest muscle will just push out the gland more. As I said, look at women bodybuilders. They build their chest muscle out but still have breasts - same in cases of gyno.

Got it done in Cosmedico - check out website. Involved one night stay and chest bandaged up for about 2 weeks - well worth it.
