I have a 2002 Honda Civic Type R. I’ve had it 5 years and its a fantastic car – I really love it – unfortunately the insurance companies do not!

The only company who would give me a quote when I got it was XS Direct. I got it through a broker (Arachas) for €1,000 – but I have a 4k excess. Last year I called a few other companies but almost no one else would touch me, cheapest quote I got was €1,500 – even with 4 years NCB and I was 29. I managed to get XS Direct down to €750 so I went with that. Now, one year later, I’m now 30 and I have 5 years NCB, live in a good area and the car is garaged, and my premium went up by €200!

So, I need to shop around again, can anyone tell me what companies might give me a decent quote?
    Thanks :)

Pretty much any ins co will insure pretty much any car, the main variable is yourself. You need to ring every ins co and a good selection of brokers to find out who's best for you. Forget about online quotes, ring.:)

Most insurance companies won't quote performance cars. If pushed they will but its always a ridiculous figure and really not worth the hassle.
Try 123.ie, they gave me a competitive quote on my rx8, fully comp and normal excess. Went through travellers insurance i believe.

One other thing - pass the IAM test and Aviva will give you 30% off.

Im insured with 123 on my FN2 and this years renewal was 730 which I only got this week. I had been ringing around companies during the week and noone was coming anywhere near that or even quoting me at all. Usual spiel hi performance car bla bla.

Give them a bell and see what they say, Id be trying to stay as far away as possible from xs direct with that 4k excess though.

No one is good m8. Everyone is avoiding you like some plague... Try to say skyline over the phone... I had such answers so far:

    We don't insure performance cars
    We don't insure skylines
    We don't insure under 25s
    We don't insure jap imports
    We don't insure rally cars ( I sh*t you not )

Best thing you can do: dip your toe I'm some seminormal insurance company. And bite the bullet for first year. Ir insure some **** box with Quinn direct, then in 3 months put on your civic. Insurance will go up only go up by 200.

I think 123.ie changed their car lists lately though.

I priced them this time last month for M3, €430, nearly took their arm aswell, but they said their quote was only valid for 24 hours.

but a week later I tried again, rang them, they said my car was on the NO NO list :(

So I ended up with AXA for little over €700, dammit I would have enjoyed insurance under €500.

Jesus, I've never heard of any m3 being insured for under 500e. Mines 999e and I thought that was cheap. I'm 30 with 6+ NCB

That's the Ignition discount - it's a different thing altogether. I can't remember the exact cost of the IAM test, but it's not crazy money. I did mine in 2002, from memory it was a morning of tuition, followed by a week of preparation on your own, and then the test. Have a look here for a start: http://www.iam.org.uk/theiamintherepublicofireland.html

123.ie said the Type R is on the no quote list. Britton said they'd get back to me. I called XS Direct and they gave me a cheaper price than my broker (Arachas) of €650. They did not even ask the model of the car - only the engine size. Still has a 4k excess but not much I can do really

Any other brokers anyone can recommend?

I have been using The Munster Group based in Ennis for the Euro R and also my previous car and they were always the best.

I'm changing cars soon and unfortunately only one insurer (Aviva) will quote me

The best quote I got on my celica was with aviva. Excess is a couple of hundred. Not anywhere near as high a group as ur type r though. Might be worth a look.

A mate of mine has a 350z and put a female friend on his policy and it dropped by a huge amount (still stupidly high, just not as high as you would expect)

Random Story: When I was ringing around for insurance for the celica, the first thing most of them said, after hearing it was a celica, was "It's not a GT4 is it?". "Ah good. We don't insure them"

I was using quoteme.ie till february this year, when they sent my renewal for my van with a premium of 700. heard from someone about insuremyvan.ie so when chatting with them I got a quote of 310 euros same van and more... same insurer -AXA .
A few days ago we bought anoter private car , a vw polo and got crazy quotes from alot of inusrers and brokers, so I said let's try again insuremyvan.ie. Asked them if they do private motor, got a guy Phillipe there who gave me a 330 euros quote , lowest quote on the market I could get, so I did it with them.
my advice will be to try them, their nr. is 01 6606900 , ask for Phillipe and see what you can get.
    good luck

Wow thanks for the help guys – I just got a fantastic quote from in www.Insuremyvan.ie – Spoke to Ian - very nice guy and he’s also a fellow boardsie! The best quote I had got previously was €650 with XS Direct, which has a horrific 4k excess but is also a sham of a policy – just about gets you legal on the road and feck all else. For €870 Ian got me a truly fully-comp policy with Axa – including all the extras like breakdown, windscreen and no claims protection etc. Happy days! Just for fun he quoted me on an M3 and it was actually cheaper than my Type R. Funnily Enough a Ferrari F430 was only a few hundred quid more haha. Anyway, highly recommended :)
