    Linky for anyone interested: http://www.avclub.com/articles/lars-von-triers-i-am-a-nazi-joke-didnt-go-over-so,56260/

The man may be a pretentious little so and so at times, but cinema's a little more entertaining place with him around.

I particularly liked how Gainsbourg was right there beside him laughing at his "I'm a Nazi" comment :D

Well her father probably left her with a... peculiar sense of humour.

Hey, any publicity is good publicity. I'm guessing he was going for a dry English wit, but you'd need Hugh Grant's accent and timing to pull off that one, and he was talking to the wrong audience ...

    Ever the controversialist

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/may/19/cannes-film-festival-2011-lars-von-trier-banned

The Cannes film festival says it has banned Danish film-maker Lars von Trier for remarks at a press conference that he "understood" Adolf Hitler.

    1. Melancholia
    2. Production year: 2011
    3. Directors: Lars von Trier
    4. Cast: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Kirsten Dunst
    5. More on this film

A statement from Cannes organisers Thursday said Von Trier was deemed "persona non grata" at Cannes for his comments a day earlier. It was an unprecedented move by the festival, which bestowed its highest honour, the Palme d'Or on the director's film Dancer in the Dark back in 2000.

The statement did not specify whether that meant Von Trier's current Cannes film, Melancholia, had been booted from Cannes and was no longer eligible for prizes.

At the press conference Von Trier said in a rambling train of thought that he understood and sympathised with Hitler. He said afterwards he had been joking and later issued an apology.

I can't believe some people are taking this seriously. If you read the transcript it is so obvious that he is joking.

There goes his film's chances of winning the Palme d'Or.

Joke or not, even watching the clip you can feel the discomfort in the room. Dunst's reactions are priceless!

interesting to follow the film's odds on PP. Was 10 / 1 at the start, down to 5/1 after the initial excellent reviews. Currently 12/1.

Presumably Cannes will just accept his apology and keep the film in for judging? It'd be some turnaround if it picked up the Palme.

Oh dear pretty cringeworthy, while clearly trying to be funny his delivery could not have been any worse. Am looking forward to seeing the film

There's nothing you don't joke about. If you don't find something funny, you don't demand that everyone else in the world feels the same. That's not how the world works.

Von Trier's reaction to the ban:
I'm proud to have been declared persona non grata. This is maybe the first time in film history that has happened. I think one of the reasons is that the French themselves treated the Jews badly during the second world war. Therefore it is a touchy subject for them.

    Zing!

That will touch a substantial nerve, gutsy comment when he is already in trouble but he really seems that type that wouldn't care less

Brutal delivery where you can just feel like he's digging a bigger hole for himself in that room.

It was funny watching Dunst squirm beside him.

^ has she distanced herself yet?

I'm pretty sure she won't be going near anything LvT-related again. She wanted to try something a bit edgy and left-field in Europe. She's done that. She'll be back on the first flight to Tinseltown and start producing the sterile high-budget muck she's comfortable with. /rant :p

Are we talking about the same Kirsten Dunst here? The one who did Drop Dead Gorgeous, The Virgin Suicides, Elizabethtown and Marie Antoinette? This is not the first time she's taken on a risky low-budget project, and I doubt it'll be the last. You can't say that about most Hollywood starlets. ;)
