    Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if someone could give me some advice.. I am currently working in an office job and quiet frankly its boring the hell outta me.. I need something more up-beat and challenging.. I have been highly considering doing the EMT course in *SNIP* Co Cork with the *SMIP* but the problem is its €2500 !!

Its a lot of money but if push came to shove i would have no problem paying that sort of money if i knew it was worth it!!

My sister is a nurse who talked to a friend of hers who is an employed EMT and he said it was a total waste of money and that you get nothing out of it... he said once you have trained and hopefully passed your EMT course they push you to do the driving courses (another €1000) and once you have spent all that money you are more or less guaranteed of NOT getting a job!!

Is this true?? I was really looking forward to this course.. It was ideal, the location was perfect its only over the road from me.. But to pay all that money is a serious waste??

Has anyone done the course?? How have ye found it??

Any taughts would be greatfully appreciated!!

    Thanks :)

Firstly the "employed EMT" must not be an employed EMT if he thinks you get nothing out of the EMT course......that is the silliest statement I have heard in a long time.

The EMT course is the highest qualification you can get pre hospital without full time employment in HSE NAS or DFB.

The course itself is excellent and all providers are subject to PHECC guidlines etc. You should, however check institutes pass rate as they differ somewhat. The one you listed above has a very high pass rate. (I have removed this from your post as we cannot advertise on the site)

In regards employment, at present there is very little employment bar in the private ambulance companies which is sparse enough. You do NOT need the PHECC driving courses for employment, however it does look good on a CV. That being said about employment.....PTS within NAS WILL come live in the next few months.......watch this space...

I'm going to assume your friends EMT is a Paramedic. IMHO EMT done privately is a waste of time if the goal is to secure employment.

For an interest, its not bad, but is it worth that to you, Bear in mind you cant follow the CPGs unless acting on behalf of an Approved body. From my own experience, a novice entering the EMT course privately ends up very book and skill sheet smart but lacks the "cop on" to be a good EMT, you need experience to get that, If its only an interest you have in it, look at a Vol group, might take 2yrs to do but you'll get a lot of training, support and experience.

^^^ +1 to this. This is the way the vast majority of private trained EMTs should have trained, and not in schools IMO. a lot qualifying knowing how to pass OSCEs and MCQs and not a clue regarding real patient contact.

Join a vol, get some experience and work your way up to EMT is my advice.

Also I believe there is a requirement to keep your skills current as an EMT by doing 40hrs a year as a working EMT ie on the job, can this organisation doing the training to fullfil this requirement.

It seems to me that the only ones getting something of value from this course is the one running the course unless you have a job lined up. Then again its like college you get a qualification but no job

Im sure each private training institute will have a CPC program setup for a fee. But looking at PHECCs requirements for the CPC I'd say your going to have an awful lot of EMTs joining the vols to be able to renew their licenses.

Started at Basic First aid in 2006 with the Civil Defence, worked my way up to EFR privately and then onto EMT privately in 2009/2010. As soon as I qualified I looked to London for employment and got a job with a private service over there. PTS, 999 Calls, Responder shifts... couldnt have asked for better! Not this taxiing ****e the privates do over here........ Yaaaaaawn! Then again this is Ireland!!!!

did my emt course with the a very recognised vol organisation.it took 7 mths, and ive worked my way up from basic,we do duties most wkends.teach first aid in schools.and give alot of our time as a vol.so yes we get our course for free.but only if you are considered to be good enough.so to do an emt in 4 weeks i think is crazy, and cant be at a high standard.its not possible

Keep your money, join a vol, do every course possible with them and try work your way up to EMT, while also gaining invaluable experience and contacts also get your c1 and d1 driving licences and apply for HSE the next time they recruit or DFB. Trust me the chances of getting employment with a private provider are very slim. Best of luck

    Hey there,
Who are you working for in London? I will hopefully have my EMT by March and thinking of heading over there for work then. Is there much work going?
    Dying to get started...
