Jobs in Ireland for Midwifes?

My sister is completing her degree in Midwifery this year. She did this degree in the UK as she has been living and working there for the last 10 years. She is thinking about returning to Dublin after she is finished to be closer to the family home.
We of course would love to have her back, but I was wondering if there are any prospects in Ireland for newly qualified midwives? I know that the recruitment embargo is making finding work in the health services much more difficult.
Also would anyone know whether getting her qualification outside of Ireland will put her at a disadvantage, would there be a preference for employing midwives who got their degrees in Ireland before they look at other candidates?

Any information people have would be appreciated

It's not looking good at the moment. I know lots of new Midwives who have gone to the UK and New Zealand. There is some agency work here but not a lot.

From that I guess that most of the agency work is probably going to midwives with more experiance then?

I wonder if there is going to be an end to the recruitment embargo for front line staff at any point?

From what the government has been saying recently, I suppose you wouldn't want to be holding out for that to happen at any point in the near future:(

Maydays. My wife was in a similar position. She studied to become midwife in London but we moved back to Dublin after her graduation. After over a year of banging her head against walls here she has moved back to London and has been working in one of the big hospitals there since Christmas.

Finding good employment in the UK seems to be fairly achievable at the moment for midwives whereas in Ireland our experience is that you could be literally searching for a position for years with no luck.

Your sister might be better off waiting out the next few years in the UK to gain some experience and see if the situation improves any here before she thinks about coming back

It's still no better especially after the early retirement scheme kicked in. Some midwives took early retirement on a Friday and were back in as agency staff on Monday....so the new graduates are getting even less work. There are some private community enterprises being developed at the moment to provide antenatal and postnatal care for mums and babies (the birth still takes place in the hospital).

There should be plenty of agency work for her in Dublin.
