I have a mate who last night got caught by the Gardai while he was taking a leak on a wall on a not-so main street in Galway city there... the street was pretty deserted apart from a few of us chatting and himself.

To be honest the nearest available toilets were easily about 400m away and it was probably either take a leak where he did or... soil himself.

Anyway, The Garda pulled over in the car and asked him a few questions, and from where I was standing he appeared to be very co-operative, I think he even offered to sit in the back of the car instead of having the Garda get out. They took his details anyway and said he'd be receiving a fine in the post.

So anyway I'm here to ask what the story is with the fine? Will it go on his criminal record or what? He would hardly be denied a US working visa based on something as trivial as that?

Just to note I've known this guy all my life and his record is squeaky clean, he doesn't have a point on his license, let alone know what a Garda even looks like :P

In relation to the fine, would it be worth his while to go down to the station today and just plead with the Garda and explain his case civilly?

If he gets a notice in the post to pay that won't constitute a criminal record should he pay it.

Ok, I think it'll be the most expensive visit to the toilet he's had anyway!

    Thanks very much!
