My other half went up to Navan the other day to pay the car tax on a car that is registered in both our names.
It had been off the road for a while so he had all relevant forms etc......
Only to be told that cars can now no longer be registered in 2 names and he would have to get me to sign car over to him!! WTF
I have to trust (which in fairness, I do) that if we ever broke up that I would still get to keep my car! I can't believe the ****e they make up!
We got the car new as well, is the new cert going to make out that he is the 2nd owner?
Just what I need is a car that is worth even less, as they decided to make up new rules.
    Rant over:o

why would ya sign it over to him if its your car

its the family car (7 seater)
I use it all the time, he has his own car.
My problem is that they have decided NOW, when both are names are on VRC that it has to be changed.
We could have signed it into my name but it would have meant filling out new forms, getting them stamped by a Garda AND (shudder) going back up to Navan!
I can't get there during the week and it was the only day my partner could get there. So decision was made

If you have a VLC from the Dept, in joint names, then your Co Co is wrong: the State didn't issue a VLC in a format you can't have.........you're going to have to get tough on this tbh.

If the car is in joint names, and your insurance......and say, your bank account and your ESB and your........you get the idea.....then CoCo is going to have to suck it up.

Or, go to a different tax office.

    Or, do it by post.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Why did you put it in both names in the first place if it's basically your car? Is his car in both your names too?

I think you have to go in person, if it has been off the road.

Navan is the nearest tax office, Dunshaughlin was closed down.
You have to do it in your own county, even though we are much closer to Dublin.
Garage just happened to put car in both names at the time.

I reckon it has to do with speeding/cameras etc.
They want one name of someone to blame if car is caught on camera iykwim

They may want all they like - but if the car is jointly owned, then that's what the paperwork must show, and that is what they have to accept as is on the VLC paperwork provided to them by the Vehicle Registration Unit, which is a unit of the Deparment of the Environment.

They have no right to insist on anything else, end of.

Sure anyone could be driving the car. Im 100% certain its not to do with that.

Maybe if you took out finance for the car (I would presume they may put both names on it then.)

I didn't know you could have two names on it.

How long has the vehicle been off the road? We had to nominate 1 person for the wife's 03 Ibiza when we went to re-tax it in either 05 or 06.

You haven't been able to have 2 people as the vehicle owners since they started issuing the single VLC.
