I would love to return to full time college. I am 36 and am working in the construction sector but would love to do something totally different. I have a wife and 2 kids and a mortgage. Am I living in fantasy land thinking that I can return to college ?? Is it financially possible?? I know of mature students and always wondered, how do they manage it?? Please let me know if anyone can tell me how it's actually possible.

there are a few finance options, but nothing that will replace your income.

check out studentfinance.ie for full details

most mature students either save a lot of money and then go, and apply for back to education allowance (requires you to be on a social welfare payment for 9 months before starting college)

or apply for the county council grant (requires you to be fully means tested and they are very strick on this, your income has to be below a certain level)

these are the 2 main options, but as i said, full details are available here http://www.studentfinance.ie

Thanks, 9 months out of work?? As usual this country has it backwards, so it would be to my benefit to give up work for 9 months before returning to college. Absolutely ridiculous

yeah i know. honestly, it would be better to introduce student loans, give the students what ever money they want for college, and then let them repay it over x amount of years when they finish college...
