    Hi,

just curious here. I was boarding a ryanair flight on tuesday morning. It was a ryanair flight. I gave my boarding pass and went to board the plane. we boarded outside and I was walking around the wing to get up the back steps of the plane and notcied that right beside the plane, at the wing tip, there was a guy in a Revenue jeep taking photos of everyone walking out the door of the building.

I am wondering if this is a regular occurance? I never saw anything like this although i dont travel that much. But it seems he was taking photos of everyone walking out.

Just thought it was a bit strange. Are they allowed to take these photos unknown to people?

Maybe this is the wrong forum just curious :)

    Thanks

Maybe watching out for known trouble makers ahead of both Obama and the Queens Visit or watching known smugglers leaving the country, would be my reckoning, where were you headed etc?

I was heading to Brussels which I wouldn't have thought would be a smuggler type of destination? (amsterdam maybe :D). If it was for smugglers/smuggler they were watching, wouldn't they already know where the smuggler was going as they would have a record of this when the smuggler's boarding pass is scanned when entering security.

He def took photos of almost everyone who was walking out as myself and girlfriend were one of the first on the plane so we were watching him from the plane.

Hope he doesn't think I am a smuggler or trouble maker :D

Could this be something to do with people claiming the dole from outside the country?

maybe the dole? or would that not be the airport police taking the photos? would airport customs be targetting that?

I didn't ask him because I was flying with ryanair and wanted to get a seat at very back of plane.

As far as I know Revenue and Customs can enter your house without warrant and seize things. They have quite alot more power than the Garda.

I don't know. I just thought it was a little strange and something i never saw before. Granted i dont fly that much but i never saw it on any other flight.

There was no signs or anything saying we were being photographed and he was taking the pictures of everyone as we were walking out the door to the plane. I actually thought he was going to get out and check our bags or something. ha. Full flight so must be lots of pictures.

I'd just like to know why he was talking our photos. I might ring when i arrive home although im sure they wouldnt tell me.

If it was to catch smugglers or dole cheats i think its a bit strange. Because if, for example they thought Mr. X was a cheat/smuggler, surely having scanned the boarding pass (to get through the security) is enough? DAA would obviously have a record to say "Mr. X fly threw dublin 20 times this month" - why need also a photo?

Also wouldnt customs/revenue just ask the airline "How many times did Mr.X fly with you this month and to where".

Ahh maybe they just like to photograph random passengers. :/

Spot on there they are very powerful people I know from the dealings with them during my time in the airline,I actually got to know a lot of the officers as I would be in and out of cargo terminal 1 every day with manifests etc.
As for the picture taking I don't know why there doing it if they want to see who flew on a certain flight the airline will let them know and the frequency of the flights taken.

See thats what i'm curious about just the photo part. Really curious now as too why haha. I AM going to ring when i get home even though i know they wont tell me. My nosiness is getting better of me.

If they were looking for smugglers and dole cheats they just have to ring ryanair/aerlingus and say "how many times has mr.x flew out with you and to where" and the airline would tell them.

Customs have the most legislative power in this country they can enter any building without a warrant in the course of their duties unlike the gardai whom need a warrant from a court judge superintendent or peace commissioner depending on the type of warrant. Revenue do not have the same legislative power they are more constrained similar to the gardai. Revenue may not enter a house without a warrant. I presume the pictures may have been taken as the gardai do work closely with both customs and revenue and if known criminals do travel outside the country they may want to take some snaps as evidence however there are other ways of doing this such as cctv at the gate before boarding they may have been watching to see if they provoked a reaction as covert agents often travel along with a known smuggler to see where they go. Hence intel o their return and gardai or customs ping they at the arrivals hall. sometimes knowing even what bag to search.
