Can someone please help. I have these h264 files on my laptop but nothing can play them because it says it does now support them? And when I mean nothing I mean I have downloaded anything possible from codecs to "supposingly" h264 media players. So can anyone answer me my question please? Thanks for any feedback it is deeply appreciated

Are you getting any errors in particular? The files working anywhere else with any known good applications?

No not working at all. When I try to open the file to play through the player it cant even find it so I just set the properties and have it open with "x" but it then pops up an error saying file not recognised etc

What operating system are you using, E.g. Windows 7, Linux, etc

What is the full file name, including any extension. H.264 encoded media are often packaged as MKV's.

When you open VLC, go "Media - > Open File". Change the filter down the bottom from "Media files" to "All files", just in case the extension has been fiddled with. Browse to where you know for certain the file exists. Select and open.

    What happens?

Are the file's rared by any chance?

Are there multiple files in the folder?

    If yes try winrar

But stick with VLC anyway best media player out there

I'm guessing its something stupid/simple thats the problem

A h264 file (with .h264 extension) is a raw video stream with no audio.

To play it properly you will need to mux it into an a/v container. For example to mux it into a MKV, use MKVMergeGUI, it comes with the MKVToolnix package.
    http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/win32/mkvtoolnix-unicode-4.7.0-setup.exe

It's drag and drop, once you've done it any video player (VLC) should play it. Like I said, there will be no audio, unless you have a separate audio stream in which case you should add it when muxing.

If you don't have a .h264 file then you havent described your problem properly.

CODEC: Encoder/Decoder. Each type of file requires a codec to run, right down to the simple JPEG. Your PC doesnt come equipped with each one you might encounter. Here is a Codec compilation that includes h264 and many other video format codecs, to work with every video player.

    http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

I usually go for Standard or the 64-bit library myself. But Mega will cover all your possible bases. If you're able to run the file but it's performing poorly, add-on GPU cards (for Desktops) excel at h264 and several other forms of video codec'ing at the hardware level.
