Thumb problems with Flamenco guitar

I've just started playing flamenco guitar as a style and i have no trouble with the rythmes or anything but i find that the skin on my thumb at the lower left part of my nail rubs the strings a lot and gets quite sore, if not cut open. Am i doing something wrong or what is the solution?
