Just heard on the news that 3 NCT workers have been fired after taking money to pass cars that had failed the test or were not roadworthy to drive.

Have to say i'm delighted but it shouldn't end there. There should be a full criminal investigation into this and these people should face jail time for endangering countless people's lives not to mention lives that may already have been taken.

Nice to see something being done about it.

That's my car ****ed in 5 months

I cant even begin to imagine the scale of bribery in the NCT racket !

I mean that was only a sample

perhaps it will be shown up now for the scam it is.

Are you against the NCT altogether?

I've often thought that might be going on. Do you reckon it's that bad?

I presume they will take the NCT service or the government to court for unfair dismissal and win a significant sum.

Wouldn't be surprised. The power of the backhander has only grown in these tough economic times

It was bigger back-handers that brought them on.

Fully deserved in the light of the available evidence.

Peoples live have been jeopardised for €50 a test

    Proper order!

They are disqualified from the dole for a time also
You may be disqualified from getting Jobseeker's Benefit for 9 weeks if you:

    Bribery pays for everyone

That dodgy director (who never responded to emails or phone calls) whom they cornered in a Tesco car park would not refuse a bribe either I'd say.

With a system like the NCT, it needs a root and branch reform. What they have done is merely a bit of pruning to keep the press and general public show that they are actually doing something.

NO just against the bribery that goes on. It happens in a lot of centres.

Disgraceful, these people should have no entitlements to the dole, they should be thrown in jail!

I mean, the didn't pass people who had a broken brake light or a wiper which didn't work, they passed cars which

    "had little or no brakes"
"had a throttle which would jam"
"had an engine secured to the car by only two bolts"

Things that could cause instant death for multiple people

(not trying to trivialise broken lights or wipers either btw.)

Its a brilliant money making racket.

I would hazard a guess that since the start of the NCT that probably no lives were saved because of it

Most accidents are due to speed or drink. Cars that are ****boxes kill people too, but its because of the people driving them while drunk.

Tires with no threads can cause accidents too, but it doesnt take an NCT to show that, it was illegal beofre the NCT.

And they have to be every year now, instead of 2 years, for older cars.

Approx. 10 percent of accidents are due to technical failure, generally brakes or tyres. The type of stuff that's taken care of outside the NCT.

    A racket, as you say.

Just wondering. I thought you were gonna come up with a good argument for not having an NCT at all.

I think there's no NCT in some states in the US and they seem to manage.

    Love these kind of statistics.

10% accidents due to technical failure
    95% due to speeding
    65% due to alcohol influence
    15% due to drugs
50% due to drivers being 'young'
25% due to unaccompanied learner drivers
10% due to go faster stripes and noisy exhausts

And that all adds up to 100%.

Thats the great thing about the magic % sign. You just make up whatever number supports the case you want to make. And it gives it a veneer of fact.

Fire and fine them. Sending them to jail is a bit extreme.

what about people paid to get car to pass?

i stay away from fonthil - seems to me the guys don't know their ass from their elbow. I complained, twice, and even in writing to headoffice. Just like every other complaints place, they checked it thoroughly (hey <name removed>, did you <complaint removed>? what no?, grand i'll tell him to f-off so) ... so i can't say i'm surprised ..

(tbh i think the nct is a scam by the government, what makes a 4 year old car more reliable than a 10 year old car?)

    No it's not.
    They committed fraud.
How many rubber-stamped NCT cars have crashed ?
They could well be up on manslaughter charges, if it could be proven that they approved a dangerous vehicle which caused a death.

So why 10 year old is cheaper 4 year old? Even with same or smaller mileage?

I think you'll find there can be more than one contributing factor in an accident.

the same reason a 1931 (an 80 year old) car is more expensive than any brand new car?
