How many opened this thread thinking 'what has he done now?' :P

After watching Run, Ricky, Run last night again - was asking myself the question 'would he have been the best running back of all time had he got his head straight?'. What do you think?

Also the other thing is, is there many other Ricky William-esque stories out there of guys who had it all and left it behind for one reason or another?

Probably not the best of all time but it would have been interesting to see his production before he turned all mental. Loved Ricky Williams in his early year dude could run. Pity he turned insane although him living in the Australian outback stories are hilarious. :D

Bo Jackson. One of the GOATs in terms of ability. He injured his hip in a play-off game against the Bengals and have to give up football. He also played Major league baseball and was very good. Obviously way before my time but loved watching his youtbue videos. The was an absolute freak, 230lbs and ran a hand timed 4.12 40 time. Always wondered how far he would have went.

+1 on Bo Jackson and I'll add Terrell Davis from the Broncos. He was a beast and I thought he might be as good or better than Barry Sanders(my all-time no.1 player). He was only a couple of yards shy of 6500 for his first 4 regular seasons before injuries destroyed him. And he didn't stop in the playoffs either where he had almost 2000 yards in 12 games. The guy had it all, he was big and hit hard, great blocker, elusive when he needed to be and fast too.

Davis had plenty of success despite that though, two superbowl rings in those four years. You do have to wonder what would have happened without the injuries, but without Elway he may not have been as successful either

    No.

Wanny was running him into the ground. Just look at the amount of carries he was getting

    2002 - 383
    2003 - 392

No running back can simply sustain that level of carries and stay fit, healthy and fresh. He was being ran into the ground and his body would have given up within 2 more years. He was the Fins offense during those years.

I love Ricky Williams, always defended him as he had a mental illness and things just got too much for him. I've huge respect for someone who can give up money, fame and being a professional athlete for his own health. He was a special RB, his body of work over the past few years further straightens that IMO, but I dont think he would have been the greatest RB of all time simply because he was literally carrying an offense.

Lawrence Phillips and Demetrius Underwood spring to mind.
