Yes any C/D or wideband UHF aerial will work at that range!

. . . assuming you're not stuck behind another mountain.

That wasn't mentioned in the OP!

I have a clear view of truskmore nothing obstructing my view.So im happy with that then.I will be mounting the aerial 6 foot from the ground or would it be better to mount if from the chimney????

I would say that if you can see the transmitter then it won't matter where you put it really! You would probably get away with putting it in your attic if you'd prefer not to have it outside. That aerial will certainly last longer indoors.

Course it is a Panasonic and they generally do not work properly here. Has the model been verified as working ???

That aerial will work anywhere it's put. So I'd stick it indoors so at least the crows won't have their day with the poor aerial, as 12 element said. Plugging in a rabbits ears would probably work in your case too.

How exactly?, according to Saorview no Panasonic models are approved right now. See.

It may actually work but how did you figure it was 'approved'

Check what manufacturers are stickered saorview approved. If they are not on this list that is downright fraud by the retailer.

Ask the manager what hell they are at...in an EE store the manager is usually the owner. Panasonics are not approved, they are notoriously non compliant in fact and are crap at released bug fixes to their software unlike others.

What's the smallest / cheapest aerial I could get away with to pick up Saorview in Malahide? Coat hanger?

This tv im buying has a mpeg-4 tuner built ito it.So wont that work for saorview whether is saorview approved or not.

It may work even though it is not Saorview approved. Stating that it is approved is fraud. We don't know who committed the fraud, Panny or the Shopkeeper. Approval costs the equipment manufacturer quite a lot.

A coat hanger is certainly the cheapest.

Try it out sure. Coat hangers are almost completely useless at picking up TV signals, a proper rabbits ears would work better for little cost. It may only work from a southerly-facing window and an upstairs window will also help your chances.

You can get a proper aerial kit which can be stuck in an attic and they cost less than €40 on the internet. It would work more reliably and also wouldn't be affected by people walking around it like with a rabbits ears.

So, do ye reckon this guy from Aldi would get me reception in Athlone, about 40 miles from nearest transmitter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,236 ✭✭✭lucernarian

Hmmm... that kit looks a little flimsy for outside work but it will receive a signal in the first instance. Trying in the loft in Athlone *should* work but I wouldn't guarantee it as such. You'd want to have no major obstacles to your view of the north at roof level. If rabbits ears work in the loft for Saorview then that aerial will work fine there too.

Thanks. Is there a solution for feeding the signal from the aerial in the attic to a TV downstairs without feeding any cables (rental house). Like a video sender solution or something?

    Cheers

Not really, but are you sure the house doesn't have a coax cable running to the living room already? You should see a plate like this in the living room:

There's a UPC coax port. I wouldn't imagine it feeds into the attic though but I'll check with the landlord. cheers

It would probably work with your finger in the aerial socket.
