Apologies if this is in the wrong forum so please feel to move if necessary.

Does anyone know what the set up is in relation to the number of cigarettes that can bought on ferries from Ireland to England and return journey?

Personal supply as it's in the eu.

I know friends that bring back 5,000 from Estonia to do them a year.

OP, do you mean bought actually ON the ferry, if so it's only one pack of 20 per person per journey if I remember correctly on Irish Ferries last year.

Although cigarettes are sold in the shop onboard and also at the bars, so easy enough to get more if there are a few of you travelling. You can't buy them until 20 mins after sailing, and also you can't buy them less than 20 minutes before arrival either.

When travelling between the UK and Ireland, there is no duty free. There may be a small discount on the full retail price, but VAT and Duty are included in the price you pay.

There are no limits for duty paid items, but there are guideline levels.

800 cigarettes is the suggested limit. Exceed this and customs may confiscate them if they suspect you are going to sell them.

Yeah, thats exactly what I was referring to.

I went over to a match a few months ago and while I got a good few packets (no problem with bar staff)i was told by a friend that I was only allowed a pack of 20.

If you cant get a carton for example on the ferry then there is no such thing really as "duty free"

There is no such thing as "duty free" within the EU, and there hasn't been for a good number of years now.

I call all cheaper fags "duty free" even though I know they're not!!

Think the packs of 20 were around 5 euro? I managed to get a good few, even queueing in the shop a good few times to see if the staff remembered me, either they didn't or they turned a blind eye.

    Not entirely true.

For example the Canaries is in the EU but is allowed dictate it's own tax laws in relation to duty, resulting in it being duty free. There are a number of other smaller regions which have this allowance and are within the EU. Gibraltar is one of the more well known ones.

Canaries are in Europe (Spanish colony) but are not part of the EU. Same with Channel Islands, part of UK, but not part of EU.

Channel Islands are not part of UK, just crown dependents, same with the Isle of Man. None are in the EU but there are special customs treaties which allow free movement of goods with the EU but I don't think intra-EU personal allowances apply though.

Yes, crown dependents, but didn't want to complicate things:D

EFTA - European Free Trade Area covers many non EU but European Countries.

I'm surprised there's not much cig traveling between Ireland and Jersey. - Flights are cheap, nice place for a weekend, reasonably priced and you can pick up a few cigs on way out and a few on the way back, though duty free limits will apply.

Yes I think so, however it will cost you full whack the same as if you bought them down the shops. If by Spain you mean the Canaries then I am not sure since it is so long since I was down to Lanzarote.
