Lifetime of an LCD TV?

Further to my post about the problem with my Samsung LCD TV, am trying to see if I have a case to push them to repair it without me ending up with a huge bill.

TV is 3 years 9 months old. Have sound, no picture. TV cost approximately four times what the current price is so it was a significant investment at the time and I certainly expected to get more than four years out of it!

Oh dear - another one! Mine is 3 years and 1 week old and wont 'fire on' at all - you can see the Red light flicker on and off and hear it repeatedly whirring on and off - seems from reading forums it is quite a common problem! I know we got ours as soon as this 6th generation came out and it cost 1300 euro!! Taking it back to shop for repair - will be very cross if this is extortinate. How did you get on with yours?

The generally accepted life of a tv is 5 years i think. OP, in your case, they're not going to repair it, wouldnt make any sense at all. A new one would be a far better proposition.

Last time it came back to life after 3 days but it's happened again. Got the Samsung recommended tech out today, he said it's the screen. Gonna talk to Samsung tomorrow, last time they said if it was on a list of known faults they would give us some options on replacement/depreciated refund. Hoping it qualifies, we bought the TV 4 years ago tomorrow.

Around about 3 to 4 years ago Samsung sets had many problems with loss of sound and picture and not turning on at all.

A lot of it was down to under-rated capacitors , so if your handy with a soldering iron and can get the right parts from the likes of Maplins , then you can fix it up yourself.

There is a range of model numbers with known problems , so do a search and make sure your model number falls in this group before trying any fixes.

I would avoid Samsung like the plague sheerly due to their after sales service. They literally do not care about you after you've bought your appliance

I just bought a Sony 32" from SamsYerMan.ie (online) in Northern Ireland and it's site indicated a 5 year guarantee :) - my main reason for going to that supplier. In the South, 1 year is the norm....

If it lasts 5 years, i reckon I'll well have my value :).

Glad to hear it! Just wondering, did you have receipts of purchase and everything?

Afaik when LCDs first came on the market, their touted life was min 7 yrs. At that time you had CRTs that lasted 15yrs, and there's still a lot of those still around. With the advances in technology, it should'nt be any problem for manufacturers to prolong the life of LCDs - should they decide to do so:rolleyes:.

I did have the receipt, but no box or anything. It was such a major investment at the time I did actually put the receipt somewhere safe. Was glad to find it as my recollection of the date of purchase was actually two years earlier than the actual purchase (I knew it was just before some friends visited us from abroad - I thought 2005 but it was 2007).

At no time did Samsung ask for the receipt but being able to give them a precise date and purchase price did help.

    just to add my tuppence:
i bought a 46" samsung lcd 3yrs and 3months ago from harvey norman.
a few weeks ago it started to need a few seconds more than usual to turn on. then it started to click on and off before coming on (same with the red light), for increasing amounts of time until now, it just doesn't turn on at all.

After reading a few forums it sounds like its a safe bet to assume it's the same capacitor issue as above.
I rang samsung, clearly explained the problem, and mentioned that i was going to attempt to remove the back myself (as per a recommendation on an american forum) but thought I'd call first because I'd heard that this is not an uncommon problem and samsung may fix it for free..
They're sending out someone to check it out in a couple of days and the fix is free if it's the capacitor problem.
They didn't ask for any receipt or date of purchase.
    I'll let ye know.

I've had to do some research into displays and I can tell you they expect to get around 60,000 hours use out of your standard LCD.

cheers, scumlord. i wouldn't have even come close to that usage.
As expected, it was the capacitor issue. the repair guy said that loads of owners had the same problem - he was in and out in about half an hour.
