    Hi folks,

I'm looking to include the above as my midweek long run - pop off the train at Castleknock/Coolmine/Clonsilla and run home from there to Maynooth.

Does anyone here run along that part of the canal? Just wondering if it's all passable/safe to run on?
I regularly run on the canal between Maynooth and Leixlip and that's fine, haven't been any further in.

    Cheers
    PK

Canal from Louisa Bridge to Coolmine fine for running and perfectly safe. It's about 5 miles or so.

Definitely passable from Castleknock to Clonsilla although there are several areas where you have to come onto roads and it's not obvious where to get back down to the canal (although that might just be me).

I was looking to cycle it and read that it was definielty ok up to leixlip.

    **edit**
Just seen the reply above so you know now you can run from Castleknock to Maynooth.
you could run it from town but I'm not sure I would fancy running past broombridge.

Will watch out for that couerdelion, cheers.
Also it's ~20 miles from town so I'll give that a skip for now ;-)

Yes, I ran all the way from Maynooth to Castleknock back in August. It's 10 miles, but at this time of year I reckon it might get quite mucky. Just don't bring brand-new white shoes!

Great I have some old runners I can use! So going from town am I better off heading straight to Castleknock and running from there or hitting the grand canal straight from town?

    It's the royal canal ;)

Castleknock to Leixlip and head towards Lucan for the grand canal and back home could make a decent LSR for me actually...

Best option if coming from city centre is to run through the Phoenix Park along Chesterfield ave and follow the main road through Castleknock which will bring you to the Castleknock train station and the canal.
If you want to join the Royal Canal in city centre the path starts at North Strand but you can only go to a point between Phibsborough and Broom Bridge as the tow path is blocked off at a bridge and there's no way around it. I'm told it'll be closed until April.

Cheersfor the info. Looking forward to this route as it will be my only weekly run that isn't some sort of circuit. can't really turn back once I've set off. Have to make it to Maynooth!
