My car has been diagnosed with a rotten crossmember by the nice guys at the NCT centre... thrawling on the net it seems common among the Nissans. Anyone else been in the same boat? Going to cost me e300 to get it cut out and replaced with a new one. Repair guy said that its a problem with the sealing in the factory, reading online Nissan have an anti-corrosion waranty but cannot see how long this lasts for, any advice? ;)

€300 is a very cheap price. Make sure he is replaceing the whole fron panel for that price and not just cutting out and welding in one part.

I did one for a member on here recently and it takes the guts of a day to do.

Excuse the terrible phone pics but if you have been priced €300 for the stripping/labour involved and supplying the part then take the guys hand and all!

My micra failed on the same thing and the local nissan garage were charging €400 plus vat labour and at that they were only going to cut out the rotten part and then just cut what was required out of the new part and weld it in.

In the end I replaced the whole thing myself but it does take a good few hours to do.

Thats pointless imo as although it only fails the NCT on the visible part, the rest of the panel is usually rotten too.

I charged €350 for the above I think it was and that was doing it as cheap as possible:eek:

Thats why I didn't let them do it. Also it would be given to some fella who probably wouldn't be careful in taking parts off etc. I wouldn't fancy doing it too often!

sorry to drag up this thread up from the dead.

nissan strikes again on two front in my case, timing chain being the first, and now an nct fail over the crossmember. I dont have the money to spend tbh. I'm thinking about buying a crossmember for 50 and either fitting it myself, or having my dad (welder) cut out and weld in most of the new crossmember.

regarding fitting it, do the wings have to come off?! I can deal with taking the rad and front bits off, i guess my question is how much is necessary to do the job.

    regards,
    redd .

    What type Nissan?

GF got Micra front member cut and new welded by indy. Was 200 and passed NCT after. Not sure if he took wings off for it, but doubt it.

If you are replacing the whole panel, as per the pics above, then the wings have to come off but if you have no problem removing the bumpers, lights, rad etc then you'll have no problem with the wings as they just bolt off. Getting everything lined up perfectly afterwards can be the tricky part.

    Hey,

I was just wondering how doing the front crossmember went for you??

I also have the exact same issue as you on my gf car and i am planning on doing the job this saturday with my dad (also a welder):)

did you change just the lower part or the whole thing and is it a hard job to do??? (time)

    Cheers:)

    hey there

we bought a new crossmember off micksgarage.ie - i frikking love that site.

it cost something like 57 euros delivered. it wasnt exactly the same, but very very close.
so we had a look at it, and found that it was all spot welded in place, and quiclky gave up, because, it woulda taken us ages, and a mechanic friend of my dads said he'd fit it for something like 200.

a few weeks later another mechanic fella my brother knows said he'd fit it for 130, so we went with that. we dont know if he ripped the front of the car apart to fit it, when i had a look, it didnt look like he had.

so i guess, the thing to do, is ring up all the local mechanics. Say you have the part (even though you dont) and ask them for a quote to fit it. Then ring the next one, and then the next one, until you hit one your happy with.
most of them will know immediately what your talking about, theyre a very common car.

the auto trade is like that i find, no logic to the pricing whatsoever.

    hey,

so i got the part myself from micksgarage.ie for 50euro and had been quoted from some places to do the job from upto 600euro :0

so i just said i would give it a go and see how it went, especially with me being a mechanic and my dad a welder i was sure we would be fine...

the job took us 8hrs to do (not that we where in a rush) and went handy enough, had to remove the whole front of the car and cut out th old crossmember (spot welds where the most effort) but once all that was out it was easy! my dad welded in the new part, i painted it all up and spayed it, put all the front back on and tested it and it was bang on :):):)
