Nissan Primera Help!

    Hi,

I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant and looking to buy a new car before I am due. I was doing plenty of research and went to some dealers and have a couple of Nissan Primeras as good options. One is a 2004 1.6 for 4,500 and tempted to go with that, however I've heard from my friend (who is a mechanic) that the Primera has a bad gear box and I should steer clear. However, I have failed to find this being the case with my research online. Does anyone have any opinions on this? I was looking at the Avensis originally but I prefer the style of the Primera.

    Thanks so much!

He's right about the gearbox and window regulators too, however the price of them reflects this, so bargain hard.

Would the later models be any better? A 2006 1.6 is priced at 5,500. If I could bargain it down to 5,000 (it has 45,000 miles) would it be worth it? How much would a gearbox take to replace if, God forbid, it falls apart?

    Thanks so much!

another issue with the primera's is crankshaft sensor failure, they re-called it long time ago.

Not sure , i don't even know the symptoms to be looking out for but maybe ring a few gearbox companies and they'll give you both sides of the story. All cars have issues so you have the right attitude and bargain hard.. 06 one sounds value at that mileage

we have had 3 primera diesels in the family during the years and never had gearbox issues, replaced 1 crankshaft sensor

all had over 230 k miles, one had something about 280 k miles

They are no less reliable then the majority of other modern cars out there.

Have you looked at the Mazda 6 from the same period as the primera's your looking at, they would be the most reliable car of that type in that price range IMO

Thanks. Yes since the warning earlier today I've been doing some more research and seen some Passats, Vectras and Mondeos for a similar price/mileage/year. I do still like the "look" of the Primeras (I know that's really girlie! :p) but there's something about them. Mazda6 didn't pop up as much in my search criteria but I'll keep looking. I may end up just biting the bullet on the Primeras if I can bargain them down enough.

Very much appreciate all the advice!

I decided to get 03 Primera a year ago, and so far I can't say a bad word about her.
Done 30k kms, and only thing which needed repairing was tie rod end (cost 50 euros for part and labour).

    Hmmm.
So mine should be gone about 20k ago (if we are talking about miles, not km's) - but it's still allright.

Its a bit random for him to give a figure like that, the wear rate has too many variables, driving style, conditions(city/motorway etc), servicing etc. Its like trying to say how many miles you'll get from a set of tyres.

There are thousands of primera's out there with big miles that have never had any issue with the box.

heres a 04 a good bit cheaper than the original 04 you were looking at. http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2169309

I agree. Others may have different experiences but here's my one:

I had a primera from new from 2002 - 2007, put 100k miles on it, and never had any trouble with the box or any other part. It was 100% reliable for the whole 5 years.

While it wasn't the most thrilling drive, it was comfortable and there are loads of safety features as standard. Which is probably a quite important to you when you are about to put a newborn into the back of it. Plenty of room in the boot for prams etc. (As an aside, I'd recommend an ISOFIX baby seat if you can afford it.)

That being said, I also have heard a lot of good things about the Mazda6.

At the right price, you shouldn't go too far wrong with a properly serviced Primera or Mazda6
