    Probably a version conflict?

If all he wants to do is view it, a quick fix could be to save it as a PDF?

Probably a stupid question... has your friend highlighted the whole thing & changed the font to e.g. Arial. Being in the area of music, I often get people sending me things that are all notes as you mention. Once I change the font, its grand.

Could be a number of things, as mentioned. Fonts, version conflict etc. For a quick and easy solution, I would suggest viewing the document in Google Docs (if your friend uses GMail), he/she should be able to view it as the original document looked (or as near as).
