what do you use the laptop for ?

    it's horses for courses

but unbuntu / firefox / noscript / adblock would be far safer for browsing than windows / ie

    ubuntu patches all it's apps
for windows only microsoft apps are patched, you have to secunia.com to get a patcher that checks non-microsoft apps too

ubuntu won't many windows apps, which are mission critical to you as many have alternatives

most games won't run, out of the box, on linux but almost all of them can be run after a bit of fiddling.

    Windows XP is unsupported now.

I have had all the operating systems.

I have a Mac now with Windows 7 as a dual boot.

Windows XP is the worst in my experience it picks up every kind of virus.

Ubuntu is stable and easy to use.

However you should boot from the install CD to test it out first to see how video and audio runs as Ubuntu does not have the correct drivers for all hardware.

In Ubuntu if the Video and audio drivers are correct for your machine and your printer works with it I would say it is a much better bet then going for buggy XP.

no doubt many third parties will offer tools after this too

window xp is showing it's age though

Jesus, they are really hanging onto XP. In fairness though, for all my bitching about Windows, XP was actually pretty decent post service pack 2. Vista was horrid, Windows 7 is a bit of a mixed bag :\

    XP is a solid OS.

However I moved over to lubuntu last week on an old laptop I have and I'm finding myself using it more and more for just general stuff. I know games will never play on this thing, but for a snappy little OS that does what I need it to do, it is more than fine.

XP has a massive install base still, worlwide.

It is a good solid OS at this stage and I have been using it since it came out.

It is showing its age and what happens to all those folks still using it when MS stop supporting it. ?

Try out Linux Mint if you are used to a lot of stuff just working. Everything works out of the box, it is based on ubuntu (ex. LMDE) so it supports all the stuff ubuntu does. Plus it does more. It's quite fast too. Essentially, it is better for the following reasons

Quick install: less than 15 minutes (Test laptop is a Packard Bell EasyNote)
Comes with GIMP, LibreOffice and various other bits and bobs.
Hardware well supported, no looking for obscure drivers. (MS Lifechat Headphones work perfectly on it with no CD. It is not easy to get them to work on a windows machine.)

The terminal is a lot more robust and efficient than the PowerShell in Windows, which is quite limited.
A lot of printers just work in it (HP and Epson especially though, with HP you need to run the CUPS script from HP, not difficult to do)

    It's just that good.

You can't really say one is better than the other its all about preference..I like ubuntu especially because I have an old laptop with no HDD and I run ubuntu off an 8GB USB with persistent changes so it's like having a portable operating system..also I find boot times significantly faster in ubuntu especially running off my USB 3.0... Also ubuntu will be safer as there are very few viruses out there for ubuntu thus eliminating the need for antivirus.. I find Internet is generally faster out of the box as you dint have windows hogging up to 20% for system use.. Also alot of hardware works out of the box or with a bit of tinkering most of the rest that don't will..Wine will allow you to run some .exe file and windows programs..and Ive seen an app that allows porting of windows games to ubuntu there recently..havnt used it so dunno if it works or how good it is.. The thing is with windows it's more mainstream so there will be alot more programs although I've found most of the free alternatives work just as good in linux..tho you may have problems with your graphic cards in ubuntu..athloogh again in the latest builds there is support for more and more of these..I'd say try it running live off a cd or USB and see If you like it..

From the little of I've seen about it Pinguy OS seems even better than Mint.
