Personally I have no interest and just don't bother with them.

Get on absolutely fine with all my colleagues but like to keep it to 9 to 5 only and prefer to do my own thing outside of work - have a good social life and good circle of friends.

Anyone else the same out there ??

    Yup, I'm the same.

I sometimes go to our staff night's out, but I normaly don't hang around for long, I would sometimes leave to meet up with my friends. Its nice to show your face at things like these, even though some of the staff members never bother to show up at all.

Have done. Never will again. Too many fights and crap. Then ya end up sucking the face of that one from HR who looks like a......... ooops maybe I should stop now.

Some of my best friends are people I worked with in last job, and I'm becoming fast friends with colleagues in current job.

I always wonder why people aren't better friends with people from work, since they are the people you spend the most time with.

I tell them sorry I'm going out with my friends. Lacking said friends I then shadow my colleagues in a batman t-shirt

...never bothered. There were some great people, but unfortunately there was always the element that I despised, and no way would I associate with them outside of work.

I go to all our work nights. Nothing like the awkwardness on a Monday morning after pulling one of your collegues at the do!:)

    I avoid work related functions.
Mainly because I'm a proper piss artist and 9 times outta 10 I'll grope/insult or all out sexual assault a member of the opposite sex.

have no interest and don't bother.another thing is the cost, i dont live in the town i work in, a taxi costs 35 euro each way. a few pints before you leave, one or 2 before you meet up = 100 euro gone before you start.
much rather spend it in my local

I go to most I'd say but only because it looks good and there are good networking opportunities.

Go to all of mine. There's no real excuse not to unless something genuinely important is happening. That's rare enough.
You have to have good times, the ****e talk and the funny looks the next day. It's great craic! And someone always says some stupid crap to the boss.
    It's all forgotten though.
I'd hate to miss all that fun.

That's exactly what I do. Have a drink or two, then head away before it all kicks off. I like my colleagues, but I have enough of them in work, it's away from them I want to get. But I have to be a little bit "social" does me no harm. It think it's kinda the best "compromise" for want of a better way of putting it!

Yeah we have great sessions on work do's. Also some of the people I work with are the friends I go out with normally so its really just a normal night out albeit with extra people and free food and sometimes free drink. Im always there until the very end too.

I never got the not going to work things or hanging out with work people, any job I have had I always ended up going out regularly with colleges and making good friends with lots of them.

I'd go to the xmas do alright but usually wouldn't stay till the death. I like everyone I work with so wouldn't have to avoid them and I wouldn't want to be the one bollox who didn't show up!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,752 ✭✭✭pablomakaveli

I get on really well with the people i work with and would be friends with them anyway so i'd always try to make it to work parties.

Also another reason is most of them are female and most of them are hot. So win-win.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,018 ✭✭✭Mike 1972

Id go to a leaving party for a workmate I particularly liked but I havent been to a Christmas do in a few years now.

Just about all my workmates are :
    1) A lot older/younger than me
    2) Married/Settled with kids or
    3) Living in other towns.

It would be pretty rare these days me to meet up with them socially outside work although I have shared houses with workmates in the past.

    I hardly ever go.

I always feel I should be receiving overtime to go to those things. :D

100% my attitude as well. I don't even tell anyone in work anything about my personal life really either.

Yes, that would be good too.

I get on well with the people I work with but I see enough of them every day and don't want a work night out eating in to the time I am away from there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭vonnie10

Very, very rarely would I go and only if its a leaving do or birthday of someone i get on particularly well with and they've specifically come up and asked me if i'm going.. Maybe it's because i've never been really pally with any of my workmates bar one, but they really seem like a complete chore.

Depends on the company - if it's a good laugh of a place, yeah.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭Azureus

Sometimes, sometimes not. I often felt I had to go to them out of obligation and would end up having a laugh, but to be honest its hard enough to find time for my actual friends outside of work hours that I dont want to be eating into that with workmates. And my friends are too nuts (in the best possible way) to introduce to colleagues on nights out so its not really an option to mix them at all

I would attend most of them, go for a meal and few drinks but I would make my escape early enough.

HR only host 2 things through out the year with my company. There's a "Social Group," but I've never really been to fussed about joining it.

Within the departments I've worked in, there's been a lot of people within my age range. We usually just went out drinking after work every Friday. Now I might hang out with them about once or twice a month since we've been moved around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

I love our work parties, we have 2 main parties. A summer BBQ and a Christmas party. We then might have 2 events during the year. Best thig is its all paid for, drink and food are free for the night and they put on buses for us.

So all we gotta do is turn up if we want too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

Always attend the Summer & Xmas parties as they are a good laugh. Plus usually have no choice when it comes to team building events. Outside of that, I would meet up now and again with people depending on what they are up to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37 dshamrock2000

I used to but dont anymore, I have kids now so anytime to get out is much more appreciated and I'd rather spend the time and money with my real mates down the local or going to a footy game etc

I've only gone to one and fcuk was it a bore-fest, the excessive brown nosing was pathetic so it was first and my last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 957 ✭✭✭GrizzlyMan

always say im never going to one again, then the night its on ill get wasted elsewhere, and always end up crashing it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

Depends on the place. I've liked the majority of places I worked in before and always enjoyed going out.

I like the people I work with now but usually skip most nights out for family responsibilities as they tend to fall on Fridays.

I think as well that when you get to a certain age (and job position), you're a little bit more wary of not getting really drunk with your work colleagues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

Only ever go out for pints with a few people in work, these all Company "do's" I never go to, waste of time and why would I want to spend my free time socialising with a lot of people I don't know or like

Difficult to draw the line when you go out getting locked with the gang. Next day if someone calls in sick to you and you know they were throwing shots back at 5am it gets frustrating and the wooden spoon never seems to be enough of a punishment.

I've never, ever rang in sick due to drink/hangover...do the crime, do the time! Anyway I've given up drinking midweek for the last 2 years or so, not a problem!

Yeah? Good stuff Fallo, there was me thinking you were a degenerate :p Giving up during the week is tough when the bar is a couple of feet away.

They bring the clothes with them, get changed and out to the bar. I remember getting into bed twenty mins before the alarm went off once. Ahhh good times :D

Im worse than Hitler now, some of the staff are brilliant, you'd never know they were drinking and others? 1 Berocca, 2 Neurofen and a Motillium cocktail everymorning!

Going to use the "Do the crime do the time" line and see how i get on at the weekend. Cheers ;)

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't I always try and leave before things get messy :)
The Christmas do's are the worst I think, a few quick pints after work is always more enjoyable

Is it not a risk giving staff Nurofen who might still have alcohol in their system? Last thing you want is them choking the chicken instead of stuffing it and wrapping it in Parma ham :pac:

I'm no degenerate, I'm an upstanding member of the community, a pillar of society! Why on earth do people have a low opinion of me???
