Went in to Three Mobile today to get the iPhone which they are advertising for free on a 24 month contract @ €40 a month. "No Catches" and "Completely Free" are the words they use on their website and after reading their terms and conditions at the bottom of the page I decided i would go in and get it. After being in there for 40 minutes, waiting for a till to free up and processing all my details, they tell me that I need to give them a 150 Euro deposit for 6 months and then i can get it back in a cheque or credit for my bills after that.

I know a deposit still means its free because you are getting it back but I can't afford to pay 150euro in one go it would take me a couple of weeks to save that up and by that time the offer will be over.

Just some advice for anyone who is thinking of taking that offer.

    "No Catches"....there's always a catch.

And on the day that my iPod got robbed from my office in work.

There's always a catch, isn't there? I'd be more concerned about your iPod being nicked. Can you do anything about that, or will you just let it go?

2 year contract, there is your catch. That's a grand on the cheapest plan...I'll spend 200 on my phone in that time.

Exactly. 2 years at €40 a month means your "free" phone is costing €960.Or am I missing something?

That is not always the case. The 150e deposit is not always asked for. If you are coming from bill pay on another network three don't always look for a deposit, this is because three can see you pay your bills on the other account.

But if you are coming from prepay you are considered a liability. What is the point on going on a bill pay contract if you can't fork out 150 in one go? How are you gonna be able to pay minimum of 40e per month for a 24 month contract?

Minimum, assuming you don't go over your monthly allowances!

No im a caretaker in an apartment block someone broke into my janitor room during the night and took it along with the work phone. Snapping all day about it.

Yes but you get 300minutes/600 texts + 150 minutes a month and all you can eat usage of data so its a good deal i think.

    Same as above.

I have no problem putting away 10euro a week knowing that I have a bill to pay. I already spend 480 on bills/rent each month. But to ask me for that kind of money on the spot with no warning about it anywhere on the website/ads or even instore is a bit ridiculous don't you think?

There's a thread already in bargain alerts about this.

And the reason you were asked for a deposit is because of your credit rating. People have got it free if you read the other thread and some we asked for up to €250

With other networks you can be asked for a deposit. The rep should have explained that you might be asked for a deposit. 150 is grand. I've seen people slapped with 300e deposits.

The money is added back on your bills after 6 months. TBH people I know who have got the Iphone complain about 3 service. **** customer care, slow internet and the likes.
