Music of 1916

Hi there,

Was wondering if anyone could help. I want to find out about popular music in Ireland between about 1910-20, and especially 1916. Whether people were into American stuff, 'alternative music, whether rebel music was controversial, and anything else that seems interesting.

If anyone could help, or suggest someone or a book, it would be much appreciated.

I reckon uptempo piano music was popular e.g. the stuff they played in cinemas for the silent films?

Two songs that are still familiar to us today were actually becoming popular around this time, namely "Danny Boy" and "She Moved Through The Fair".

The "Michael Collins" film soundtrack could be worth checking out, although it does look like most of the stuff on it was specially written for the film.

Although set in an American setting, one book worth consulting is How the Beatles destroyed Rock N'Roll http://www.elijahwald.com/beatlespop.html It gives a good overview of the trends of the time (i.e. the polpularity of Sousa) chart placings based on sheet music sales as opposed to music sales as well as other features of the scene. In cultural imperialist terms, it could give you an idea of what was deemed fashionable and therefore dominant!
