Seemed genuine and agreed to pay half before and half after. Well in fact it was €100 before and the other €250 when I got it. I got his bank details, said he could use his mothers so womans name on the account. I trandfered the €100 in and BOOM havnt heard from him since. Any advice on what to do?

    Valuable lesson learned.

Valuable? Where's the value and for whom?

The OP handed over money to a complete stranger with no F2F contact, sorry but he'll get no sympathy from me.

No need to get abusive. You're not going to get sympathy from everyone.

Now you know why the 'seller' claimed to be in Donegal. He probably looked at a map of Ireland and picked a location as far from the major cities as possible, precisely so he wouldn't have to meet you, hence the money transfer scam.

Pick up the iPhone 4 dock anyway (handy for charging), probably a screen protector and maybe a bumper if your hard on phones.

Few of em on adverts at the moment.

The same happened to me with someone from cork. Everything was going great then I put the money into his account. Never saw the phone and never heard from him again. My advise is to stay away from people who offer this, that's not saying that he is not genuine but I'd stay away.

To be honest, if it sounds too good to be true - it usually is.

Rare are the bargains, and ipods, and iphones and ipads etc are all popular with scammers.

Sorry for the loss, but look at it this way - you will be cautious next time.

I learnt that lesson before, thought i was buying a laptop, transferred money (I will never trust western union again BTW) only to be told by seller, that it was heavier then expected, and blah blah blah - lost a few quid, and only buy now from online shops or confirmed sellers - by friends only.

Thats the lesson dumbass... dont hand over money to strangers that you are only in contact with over the phone

I feel a little sorry for the OP but thats what Paypal is for. To protect everyone.

A bit foolish to lodge directly into a bank account.

Tempers are getting a tad frayed here. Would those who haven't lost anything kindly lose the tone of the High Smug Ground.

Any further infractions and I shall close this thread.

Hope these isn't seen as stirring **** culabula, as not intended that way, but I think it is a lesson to think carefully before handing over money to a stranger for something that sound too good to be true.

There is av inherent risk on buying any product otherwise than true reputable sources. While retail stores may be dearer, you know what you are getting and from whom when buying a product. If problems arise, you know where to find the vendor and have the benefit of consumer law remedies.

Its a harsh lesson for the OP but I think once you go outside the retail channels to buy a product, you have to accept the risks that go with the territory. Unless you use common sense precautions, you're liable to get burned.

It's all in the game as the saying goes in Baltimore.

I queried your use of the word 'Valuable', not 'Lesson'. The exercise was 'Valuable' to the scam artist, not to the OP.

Valuable because he wont do it again and lose another €100, maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭jarvis

You can get this money back easily, just PM me your creditcard number with expiry date and 3digit code from the back and I'll forwardyou details of how to get it back.

    Sorry couldn't resist

If you care to read the 2 words side by side they have a different meaning.

Its the context in which the words are used.

Your posts are of no value to this thread. hence it has multiple meanings.

Now go away and stop trolling

The experience of loosing the money is valuable. He will think again before he gives it away foolishly. Im sure you have heard this phrase before..

Can see this being closed very shortly.

People get caught out all the time. Trusting too easily.

When it comes to money trust no one.

Surely if you contact the cops and give them the account number you transferred the money to then maybe they can find yer man so you can go sort him out.

Would you be interested in my sig?

I'm sorry but given the amount of coverage this type of scam gets, its absolutely unbelievable that anyone would transfer money to a complete stranger on the promise of a phone. Thats ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭culabula

I did ask that you all calm down and despite a polite warning I further notice that the OP decided to sneak in an extra hostility, undoing any sympathy he might otherwise have deserved.

    Therefore this thread is closed.
