Changing PS3 Hard Drive

Ok I know there are probably loads of threads about this already but I had a specific question, would the hard drives on this page all be suitable for use in a ps3? (old 40gb model) I was looking at the 500gb samsung or hitachi ones, they seem good value and I can pick them up immediately. I've got less than 500mb left and with the PSN back up I've free games to download (not to mention LA Noire to install on Friday).

I'm just afraid of buying something that won't be any use to me.

Also does anyone have any recommendations regarding brands, samsung/hitachi/western digital etc. does it make any difference? Likewise with RPM speeds and cache, does it make a difference to the performance or functionality of the PS3?

    Thanks in advance...

    They will all work.
Probably avoid the 7200rpm models, don't want to put excess heat into the console.

Ah, hadn't thought of that cheers. I was going on the assumption that faster would mean better. Will the slower speeds lead to any noticeable differences in the operation of the console?

Anyone have any tips on backing up data? I have an external hard drive but it's in NTSC format is there any way to get around this without taking everything off it?

I'm about to change the hard drive in my ps3 for a bigger one and I've backed up my PS3 to an external drive. When I swap out the HDD and then restore my data from the external drive will I have everything as before?

I'm not worried about music or films (don't have any on there) but will I have games I downloaded from the ps store??

don't think the games will still be there but you can download them again for free from the store once it's back up.You can do it five times before it runs out and you have to pay for them again.

Sorry F1ngers, you're right I should've just added on to this one.

Ah, I forgot you could just download them again with your psn id thanks.

Ended up buying a western digital scorpio one from elara, 500gb. For 55 quid it's well worth upgrading if it works out.

If you do a backup everything will be there, even your PSN games.

Is it possible to put the new hard drive straight in without formatting it first or does the ps3 format it for you? I don't have an external casing for the drive so I'd have no way of doing this.

The PS3 will do its own formatting.

Hard drive successfully changed with all games etc transferred over when I restored it, happy out:) thanks for all the useful replies.

Now all I need is the PS store to come back so I can start downloading stuff...

Edit: For anyone else who had trouble backing up their original ps3 hdd onto an external drive I found the program "easeus" to be great, it allowed me to make a small partition on my external drive and change it to fat32 format very easily, ps3 then picked this up straight away when I plugged it in.

Cool, very tempted to stick a 2.5" 1TB into my own. You need to mod the caddy but I just might give it a lash soon.

I'm looking forward to the extra space, could never download demos or anything like that before with just 40gb, constantly deleting game data from games I hadn't played in awhile etc.
