Recently got new broadband installed. Have the ethernet cable plugged into connection on laptop, but when i try connect it says 'network cable unplugged'.
Is there any reason it would say it's unplugged when it's clearly plugged in??

the laptop is a toshiba thing and is a few years old now. I use windows xp

    Thank you.

could be your ethernet connection - mine goes disabled - it nneds to be manually enabled or restart the laptop works for me.

    Network and sharing centre
    manage network connections
chose "local area connection 1" - for me anyway
you can "diagnose" or enable from here - assuming this is the problem of course:)

Have you connected the cable from the correct port on the router? Have you tried another cable (assuming you have a spare one of course)?

Yeah, there is only one option on both the router (box) and on the laptop.

Are there activity leds on the ethernet port of the laptop? If so are they showing any sign of being on?

There are no leds on the laptop. On the wee box that the cable is coming from there are three lights, the power one is on (obv), the wireless one flashes but the ethernet light is off.

Well then your BB is either down or there is a problem with the connections in your house. Did you setup the BB yourself?

The same crowd tried connecting me up before and there was no connection. They've now said they improved the mast and that I am now connected, I'm quite sceptical and just wondering if its a problem on my side.
