Rang carlow gc to book in and its prepaid. €40 for 36holes & the girl i was speaking to didnt know if lunch/dinner was included. A bit steep i think, always expensive to play in there. Heard the greens are very poor there also. Kilkenny great value at €30 including dinner.

Carlow Senior Scratch is usually 72 holes over the saturday and Sunday.
Are you sure its only 36 holes this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,627 ✭✭✭Benicetomonty

Its 72 if u make the cut, 36 sat and again sunday. 40e for that is v good and iv never had a prob with the greens in 3 yrs of playing it!

Its 72 Holes. Lunch is included in the price, but only for Sunday not Saturday.
I'm a member and I have to pay €40! Hardly steep for a visitor.

Greens are shocking at the moment though, Ladies Close is starting this week so hopefully they will be okay in time for the Scratch Cup.

Oh €40 for 72holes is very good value then. Its my first time to play senior scratch there so thought it was 36. Benicetomonty , i didnt mean the greens were bad all the time, i heard they were poor at the moment compaired to usual as comfirmed by Royalcarlowgc.

I agree 72 Holes is too much and I will pass on your comments to the GM.

My opinion is that they still think the Midland Scratch is as big as Mullingar and need to keep it to 72 holes. Sadly as we all know it isnt, even though Mullingar isnt a patch on Carlow (IMO), Mullingar get the top boys. (Mainly due to really good marketing, closer to Dublin & the North, and its held on good dates.

I think 36 holes would do the job nicely.

South of Ireland Champion 2010 to win it

it really shud be 36/54...with nothing on this wkd...it shud be the big one to go to....nothing tho to stop others turning up as 16over will get you a top 10 prize...hope weather stays decent

Good to see the greens have improved! Windy weather forecast though, RC if you have any swing with the green-keeper, please tell him/her to set pins that are fair/intelligent! Would be nice to play 18 holes in the knowledge that there's a small possibility you won't three-putt. Hasn't happened in Lucan for a while!

If you know Carlow you CANNOT do the following:

    Go big on 4th, 6th & 16th!
    Or
Take on pins on 9th,13th,14th,17th. Middle of green will do!

Other than that should be okay - greens are small enough like.

If this windy weather keeps up id say 12 over will make the cut

Yea and while you're at it RC, can you reduce the lenght of all the par 4's to par 3's and make them par 5's. That should be easy enough for Benice then and keep him happy:pac:.

At least then I could 4 putt for par I suppose

As a general rule though, if you're anywhere beneath the hole and you hit a putt that comes back to you or will not stop anywhere within 6 feet, that is an illegal pin. Wind and fast greens will make this prospect more of a possibility and that HAS to be considered when setting usually playable, fair(ish) pins. Pro's would refuse to play such a hole (and have done- shinnecock 2004, St Andrews last year) because it undermines the tournament. Technically (not figuratively :D), we're playing the same game as they are, so common sense ought to be applied.

RC, I'm well aware of those holes you mentioned, especially number 4. That's the hole in need of most consideration imo, but whilst I've three-putted it in the past, I've so far never seen it unfair. Lets keep it that way!

You will have enjoyed the pin on the 7th yesterday

Don't talk to me, I can only assume it was the same as the one on Saturday? Middle of the green but cut half-way up the tier? Holed a nice 10 footer straight up the hill for a bogey. Got a good read though since I had the exact same putt for par

    Thread hijack.
Must be tough going playing in the Junior and Senior Scratch cups is it when it's 36 holes in one day ? though this one is over 2 days which in itself be tough.
And seeing as a fair few posters play/ed in them over the years, have yas won any?

Have played a couple Intermediates since last year and came nowhere but can see it be a good achievement to win a scratch cup especially if ya were an honest golfer playing off a genuine handicap.

I'm sure there's a few of us! Won my home scratch cup (Junior Scratch in Lucan GC) off 4 back in 2008 and it remains my fondest memory out of anything I've ever won playing golf.
Rounds of 73, 71, a total that has yet to be beaten by a JSC winner and contained probably the best shot I've ever hit on one hole when I knew exactly where I stood: what more could I ask for? :D
Would love to win one away from home..had a couple of close calls at Carlow and the 'ol 54 holer at Borris GC a few years ago..seriously struggling at senior scratch level right now so with the amount of .1's Im currently hoovering up, I should be back at JSC level in no time :o

TBH, I think a scratch cup should be 36 holes- anything less is just an open singles strokes. Your golf and your endurance are tested over 36, and the whole competition has more of a proper tournament feel about it.

Really **** field this year. But what do they expect? They should have an article on the times 2 weeks before it starts. Make lads aware of past winners etc. Even des morgan who has won it twice wasnt there

Good man yourself, great to have a win like that plus the fact in having the record for lowest total makes it even sweeter and something to be proud of.
Being in contention for others as well says a lot about your golf so hopefully ya will stop the .1's and stay in that category.

Even though i haven't played in a 36 hole competition i would agree with your view on it. Looking forward to competing in them when i get down low enough, 11.3 at the moment so hopefully will get a couple in by the end of the season.
